8 Sayyafs yield in Sulu
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Eight pro-ISIS militants have surrendered to the military as operations against the Abu Sayyaf continue in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, security officials said Monday.
Officials said the militants - Adsjar Hassan Sabdani, Jenyor Daihan Madjid, Araham Abdul, Delson Abdul, Jasim Uppih Umair, Nurhajir Amirol Patta, and Wilson Tatting Asid - also handed 6 rifles and a pistol when they surrendered over the weekend in Parang town.
Lt. Gen. Arnel Dela Vega, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said the surrender of the gunmen was the result of the intensified campaign against the Abu Sayyaf. He said dozens of militants and their supporters had yielded to the military since last year.
“The series of capitulations is an offshoot of the no let-up campaign being launched by military troops to quell terrorism in its area of responsibility. With our sustained offensives, we anticipate that more Abu Sayyaf militants will heed the clamor for them to give up, rebuild their hopes, and work for peace with every Suluanon,” he said.
Dela Vega said the military operations will not stop until the Abu Sayyaf is destroyed as ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte. “We will sustain pursuit operations against the Abu Sayyaf to ensure the safety of the people on the ground and that peace in their community will be achieved soon,” he said.
The militants, who were followers of Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders Alhabsy Misaya, Sibih Pisih and Apoh Mike, surrendered to Col. Antonio Nafarrete, commander of the 1101st Infantry Brigade. The surrender was facilitated by the 2nd Special Forces Battalion. Another Abu Sayyaf fighter, Misal Abdulwahid, a follower of militant leader Idang Susukan, also yielded to Nafarrete.
The Abu Sayyaf is still holding nearly a dozen mostly foreign hostages, mostly fishermen, kidnapped off Sabah. (Mindanao Examiner)

Ex-town mayor in Duterte “narco list”, brother killed in Cotabato
COTABATO CITY – A former town mayor accused by President Rodrigo Duterte as a drug lord was killed along with his brother in separate anti-narcotics operations Friday in southern Philippines.
Both Talib Abo Sr, who served as mayor of Parang town, was slain in a firefight at his home, while Disumimba Abo, a town councilor in Parang, was also killed in Cotabato City, according to the police.
Members of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and the local police force were involved in the operations. The two brothers reportedly engaged the lawmen - who were serving warrants - in a gunfight and eventually killed.
There was no report of casualties on the side of the lawmen.
Duterte tagged the former mayor as one of the so-called “narco” politicians after his name was included in the government’s drug list. Over two dozen politicians, mostly mayors and deputy mayors, linked by Duterte to illegal drugs, had been killed the past two years. One of them, Albuera town mayor Rolando Espinosa, was slain by policemen while inside his jail.
Thousands of civilians, including teenagers and women, implicated in illegal drug trade, had been killed in anti-narcotics operations by the police after they allegedly resisted arrest and engaged cops in firefight. Others were murdered by motorcycle gunmen. (With a report from Rhoderick Benez.)

Sulu gets poultry farm, housing project from Go Negosyo and Bounty Fresh Agro Ventures
SULU – A poultry farm that can accommodate thousands of chickens is soon to start construction in the town of Parang in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, Gov. Toto Tan said Wednesday.
Tan said Bounty Fresh Agro Ventures in partnership with the Go Negosyo Program and the provincial government have launched the “Kapatid for Agro Bounty Fresh Poultry Farm” in the village of Tukay.
He said the livelihood program will greatly help many beneficiaries since Bounty Agro Ventures will also provide training for those who would be selected to run the farm.
Sulu Gov. Toto Tan with Ana Margarita Malvar, the project head for the Muslim autonomous region and adviser for Agri- Enterprises of the Go-Negosyo Program; and Dr. Kier Jason Fernandez, Bounty Fresh Contract Growing Supervisor, led the ground-breaking ceremony attended by the town’s mayor Madzhar Loong. Tan, together with Ana Margarita Malvar, the project head for the Muslim autonomous region and adviser for Agri- Enterprises of the Go-Negosyo Program; and Dr. Kier Jason Fernandez, Bounty Fresh Contract Growing Supervisor, led the ground-breaking ceremony attended by the town’s mayor Madzhar Loong.
Fernandez said an initial investment of 5,000 chickens and poultry housing will be provided by their company to jump start the livelihood program.
Loong expressed his gratitude to Go Negosyo and Bounty Fresh Agro Ventures for the livelihood package. “Maasahan ninyo na sisikapin namin mapaunlad ang malaking oportunidad na pang-kabuhayan na ibinigay ninyo dito sa Barangay Tukay,” Loong said.
Malvar, for her part, reminded recipients to seize this opportunity and have their best interest in mind. “The determination of its success is now in your hands,” she said.
Tan praised Go Negosyo and Bounty Agro Ventures for their continued support to Sulu’s various pro-poor programs.
Malvar also handed out housing certificates to the beneficiaries of the first batch of the Go Negosyo Kapatid Village in Kalinggalan Caluang town where an initial 8 are ready for distribution.
Town Mayor Peping Halun thanked Malvar and Go Negosyo founder Jose Maria Concepcion III, who is also Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship. (Mindanao Examiner)
