ZAMBOANGA CITY – Local health authorities said that
a 61-year old female detainee who died 3 days ago in hospital was positive for the
novel coronavirus (Covid-19) after test results came out Sunday.
She is the 3rd prisoner to die from the
fatal respiratory disease and the 60th case for Zamboanga since it
placed the whole city under strict community quarantine in March due to the
pandemic which originated in China in December and spread to the Philippines.
“The Department of Health confirms today the 60th
COVID-19 positive for Zamboanga City. ZC-60 is the 61-year old female person
deprived of liberty who expired due to community acquired pneumonia, diabetes mellitus
type 2 uncontrolled, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state last April 30 at the
Mindanao Central Sanitarium Hospital,” the Zamboanga City Task Force Covid-19
headed by Mayor Beng Climaco said.
The prisoner
was rushed to hospital on the same she died due to breathing difficulty and had
been swabbed before she expired. “Her death was suspected to be Covid-related until
the (test) results confirming her case arrived this afternoon, May 3,” the task
force said.
Over two dozen prisoners and jail guards here were also infected with
the disease after initial medical results came out Saturday following mass
testing at the local penitentiary.
The total number of positive cases
here is now 60, including 3 jail personnel and the latest casualty.
Health authorities continue to
test prisoners after 2 of them died one after the other late last month due to
the respiratory virus. But the number of infected prisoners is expected to
increase as more Covid-19 test results are expected to come out in the comings
