Magnitude 5.6 quake rocks Davao Occidental

A MAGNITUDE  5.6 quake rocked Davao Occidental on Wednesday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 31 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Jose Abad Santos at 8:45 p.m.

It had a depth of 83 kilometers, Phivolcs said.

Intensity 3 was felt in Glan, Sarangani, while Intensity 2 was recorded in General Santos City.

The following instrumental intensities were also recorded: Intensity 4 in Malungon, Sarangani; Intensity 3 Alabel, Sarangani; and Intensity 2 in Kiamba, Sarangani, General Santos City, Tupi, and South Cotabato.

"Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum, Jr. told the Philippine News Agency in a text message.

He said Phivolcs deployed around 100 instruments or intensity meter to measure the ground acceleration.

"Acceleration record is converted to intensities. What is being measured is called the instrumental intensity," he added.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said aftershocks are possible from the magnitude 5.6 quake, while damages are not expected. (By Ma. Cristina Arayata)
