ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police killed an Abu Sayyaf militant linked to the ransom kidnapping of 6 Indonesian fishermen off Sabah in Malaysia four years ago.
Brig. Gen. Jesus Cambay Jr, chief of the regional police force, said a team of commandos and several police units tracked down over the weekend Salip Adzhar Alijam in his hideout in the village called Masao in Zamboanga Sibugay’s Tungawan town.
Armed with a warrant, security forces tried to capture Alijam, but he opened fire on the police and sparking a firefight and was eventually killed, said Cambay. “Alijam was killed in a shootout after he fired upon the operating troops about to serve the warrant,” he said.
Cambay said the slain militant was also identified by his Indonesian hostage Herman Bin Manggak as one of those who kidnapped them. “He was personally identified by one of the Indonesian kidnap victims identified as their abductors following coordination made by the operating units with the Indonesian Consul in Davao City,” he said.
He said commandos also recovered Alijam’s .45-caliber pistol, including a Garand rifle, ammunition and a hand grenade. “We commend the untiring efforts of our operating troops for a job well-done,” Cambay said.
