Seeds, blankets for Zambo

SENATOR Cynthia Villar recently donated vegetable seeds and blankets to the Zamboanga City government and intended for flood victims.

The donation was received by Mayor Beng Climaco and City Administrator Apple Go from Jaydrick Johnson Yap, the president of the Southern Philippine Deep Sea Fishing Association, and vice president at YL Fishing Corporation based in Zamboanga.

Climaco said the donation included some reading materials on home gardening.

“Muchisimas gracias Senator Cynthia Villar. The seeds will be distributed to interested residents for backyard gardening. Through home or backyard gardening, people can grow their own food and improve nutrition,” she said.

Villar, the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, urged the public to start urban agriculture and home gardening projects, especially now that prices of vegetables are high.

She said starting a home garden is not only sustainable, but beneficial as well since the work suspension and mandatory home stay imposed by the government due to the Covid pandemic created an opportunity to start worthwhile activities at home.

“Sa atin na nasanay na laging may ginagawa, nahihirapan tayo paano papalipasin ang oras. Planting is something you can start alone or with your family. It’s a way of introducing agriculture to our children,” Villar said.

Last year, Climaco - a lover of plants and an environmentalist - also urged locals to start their own backyard gardening and sell vegetable and flowers, even fruit trees as an additional livelihood. (Zamboanga Post)
