Gwen forms task force on traditional health care

CEBU - The Provincial Government has created a task group to fast track the development of traditional and alternative health care.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, a staunch advocate of traditional and alternative medicine, issued Executive Order (EO) No. 10 that laid down the powers and functions of the task force. Garcia, chairs the Cebu Provincial Task Force on Traditional and Alternative Health Care while Department of Health (DOH) 7 Director Jaime Bernadas sits as the vice chairperson.

Dr. Dale Pasco, a traditional medicine practitioner for 29 years now, lauded the creation of the task force which follows the Republic Act 8423 or the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997. “Nindot ni siya nga task force, sa pag-promote sa traditional ug alternative medicine kay majority sa atong mga kaigsuonan dili ka-afford og tambal, pobre. So, ang pinakadali nato nga gamiton like for example sa Covid-19, steam inhalation, which daghang mosupak, pero sa akong experience, daghang nanga-ayo,” he explained.

“Sa kini lang sa alternative medicine, sa imong pag-change sa imong pagkaon sa gulay ug prutas, dako kaayo na siyag effect sa imong body,” he added.

He also said that even science agrees that eating fruits and vegetables can ease or even cure high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney problem, among other diseases. Pasco and the members of Concerned Doctors and Citizens of the Philippines (CDCPH), a group of doctors from Manila, met with Garcia on Monday, February 22.

Another CDCPH member, naturopathic doctor Roderick Tan also expressed his support to the Capitol’s move to promote traditional and alternative health care.

He said that one way of battling Covid-19 and other diseases like common colds and flu is to drink red onion juice.

“You get red onions and juice it. You grind it. 10 to 15 ml per meal or three times a day, which can be used against Covid. You partner that with food that are high in zinc because the onion itself is high in quercetin and quercetin is zinc ionophore. Zinc is the bullet that kills the virus but the zinc has to enter the cell. The zinc ionophore allows the zinc to enter the cell,” Tan explained.

“I’ve done that to people who cannot afford. They just use their onions at home and they got well,” he added.

According to the EO, the task force will plan and carry out research and development activities in the areas of traditional and alternative health care and work on its ultimate integration into the provincial health care delivery system.

It will organize and develop continuing training program on traditional and alternative health care for Cebu doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and other professional health workers.

The training program will also cater students, scientists, research managers, and extension workers, as well as barangay health workers and barangay nutrition scholars.

It is also tasked to promote healthy living as a way to prevent diseases and create public awareness through educational activities, conventions, seminars, conferences, and the like.

Other members of the task force are Pasco, Provincial Board Member Kerrie Keane Shimura, committee on Public Health and Social Services; Dr. Cristina Giango, Cebu Provincial Health Officer; Marivic Garces, Cebu Provincial Social Welfare and Development Center; Dr. Roldan Saragena, Cebu Provincial Agriculturist; Marilyn Andales, Department of Education-School Division Superintendent of Cebu Province; and Dr. Erlinda Posadas, Visayas Primary Health Care Services, Inc.
