CEBU CITY – Murder convict and cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr died of cardiac arrest at the New Bilibid Prison more than week after returning from a private hospital in Manila, according to the Bureau of Corrections.

A police photo shows former Dinagat Islands Congressman and cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr following his capture last year.
Before he died, Ecleo - a former congressman in Dinagat Islands - was rushed to the Dr. Sabili General Hospital in Taguig City.
The lawmaker was serving life sentence for
murdering his wife, Alona Bacolod, in their home in the village of Guadalupe
here in on January 5, 2002. Her remains were found six months following her
death in a trash bag in Cebu's Dalaguete town and police stormed Ecleo’s
residence on Dinagat Islands resulting in a 3-hour gun battle with armed cult
members that left 17 people dead, including a policeman.
Ecleo, Supreme Master of the Philippine Benevolent
Missionaries Association, was captured in Pampanga province outside Manila in
July last year. Before his arrest, police surveilled his hideout for 6 months.
His driver, Benjie Fernan, was also arrested for obstruction of justice.
In 2012, Ecleo was sentenced to life imprisonment
for the murder of his wife. He was also convicted of graft in 2006 for the
anomalous construction of a public market and town hall, and repairs of his
cult's building in San Jose town in Dinagat Islands when he was then mayor in
the early 1990s. He was sentenced to 31 years in jail. (Jelly Musico. Cebu
