'Dante' likely to make landfall over Sorsogon-Samar Tuesday

TROPICAL STORM (TS) Dante may make landfall over Leyte or Samar area either Tuesday afternoon or at night, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Ana Clauren said.

"It will maintain its strength as a tropical storm within the next 24 hours, and is expected to be in the vicinity of Sorsogon by Wednesday," she said.

"Dante" packs maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center, and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

The TS was last tracked 235 km. east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte, moving westward at 25 kph.

"The center of Dante is (over the Philippine Sea), but its outer rainbands has been affecting a huge part of Mindanao and the Visayas. That is why, these areas are currently experiencing heavy rains," Clauren said.

Rough to very rough seas will continue to prevail over the seaboards of areas under TCWS no. 2, and the eastern seaboard of Caraga. Sea travel is risky for small seacraft over these waters.

Moderate to rough seas was forecast over the eastern seaboard of Davao Oriental and the remaining seaboards of areas under TCWS no. 1. PAGASA advised mariners of small seacraft to take precautionary measures when venturing out to the sea.

Meanwhile, Clauren said PAGASA is also monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

"It has a slim chance to develop into a tropical cyclone. Currently, it has no direct effect on any part of the country," she said.

The LPA was last seen 1,560 km. east of Mindanao. (Ma. Cristina Arayata)
