Police search for mother who abandons infant

KIDAPAWAN CITY – Police are searching for the mother of a new-born baby boy who abandoned the infant in South Cotabato’s Norala town.

The baby was inside a bag when Ricky Dequina heard a cry outside his employer’s house in Purok Aquino in San Miguel village last week. This was confirmed by the hose owner, Mary Kris Dela Cruz.

Dela Cruz said they rushed the infant to a clinic and found that the baby’s umbilical cord had been cut and he could be about 3 days old. They believed the baby’s mother had no intent to harm the infant because he was properly dressed and the bag unzipped, ensuring the baby could breathe properly.

She said a piece of garlic was also found tucked in the baby’s clothes, a traditional belief by many old folks that it would drive away evil spirits and ghouls. The baby was eventually handed over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The baby’s mother, who remains unidentified, is facing criminal charges for abandoning the child and putting his life in grave risk. (Rhoderick BeƱez)
