Hospitals put up more Covid beds

CEBU CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) said all hospitals in Central Visayas have increased their bed capacity following the spike in Covid-19 cases in the region.

“All hospitals have increased Covid bed accommodations plus ICU (intensive care unit) beds,” DOH Regional Director Jaime Bernadas said, adding, they are also deploying healthcare workers augment those in private hospitals. “DOH hospitals are also hiring more for its staff,” he said.

The region now has a total of 840 hospital beds for Covid-19, on top of the 1,601 beds in different isolation facilities, and at least 162 ICU beds.

The DOH has 5,154 contact tracers, according to Bernandas. “We are responding as the health sector for the needs of our patients as our political leaders manage the non-health problems that the Covid-19 pandemic continues to bring. We will continue to provide as needed,” he said.

The region has more than 8,800 active Covid-19 cases. (John Rey Saavedra)
