Police intercept smuggled cigarettes

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police seized at least 137 boxes of smuggled cigarettes in separate operations off Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials said on Saturday.

Col. Rexmel Reyes, chief of the Zamboanga police force, said police forces intercepted two speedboats loaded with cigarettes near Manalipa Island. He said eight crew members from Basilan province and Zamboanga City were also apprehended by members of the 2nd City Mobile Force Company and a team from the Bureau of Customs.

Police photos show the seized smuggled cigarettes from Sulu's Jolo town.

The Friday operations, Reyes said, yielded illegal cigarettes with brands San Marino, Union, Cannon, and Fort worth nearly P4.8 million and the contraband was bound for Cotabato City. He did not say whether the untaxed cigarettes came from abroad or not, but the boats originated from the town of Jolo in Sulu province.

“All seized items and eight crew members were turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition,” Reyes said.

He also lauded the successful anti-smuggling campaign and those that participated in the operations. “The ZCPO will continue its strict border control maritime operations in the fight against criminality, illegal drugs, smuggling and all forms of illegal activities,” he said.

ZCPO refers to the Zamboanga City Police Office. (Mindanao Examiner)
