ZAMBOANGA CITY – A boy was killed and another wounded when a suspected mortar bomb they were tinkering exploded on Monday at a beachfront near the navy base here, police said.
Police said the victims found the bomb and started hammering it when it exploded and instantly killing a 12-year old boy, Erickson Bantuhan.
Medical responders from the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office were also spotted in the area trying to revive the boy, but they failed. The wounded child, 14-year old Jovan Cadungog, suffered serious shrapnel wounds and was rushed to hospital.
Other reports said a third boy managed to flee from the scene shortly after the blast in the village of Rio Hondo. It was unknown if he was wounded or not. One report said the children tossed the bomb and exploded upon hitting a concrete wall.
It was not immediately known where the children had recovered the bomb, but the area is supposed to be off limits to civilians.
Policemen quickly cordoned off the area as members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team combed the beach for evidence to determine the type of the bomb the victims found. Police were investigating the blast. (Al Jacinto)
