Coast Guard rescues 6 boat passengers off Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Philippine Coast Guard patrol has rescued Thursday six people, including three minors, after the engine of their motorized boat malfunctioned off the southern province of Basilan.

Philippine Coast Guard photos show the rescued passengers after the engine of their motorized boat malfunctioned off Basilan province on Thursday, February 17, 2022.

The crew of the BRP Malamawi spotted the boat drifting near Little Coco Island and quickly rescued the passengers. The civilians said they were heading to Sacol Island in Zamboanga City from Basilan when the boat suffered engine trouble and drifted for two hours until spotted by the patrolling Coast Guard.

“While traversing the vicinity waters off Sibago Island in Basilan, the BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403) sighted the said motor banca that was dead in the water for approximately two hours. Immediately, the PCG rescued the passengers and provided them with necessary assistance,” the Philippine Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard towed the boat and ferried the passengers to Zamboanga City. “The BRP Malamawi  towed the distressed motor banca to the Zamboanga City Pier for needed repairs, while the rescued individuals were turned over to the Philippine Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao for medical check up and for further assistance,” it said.
