Police arrest man for bomb threats during Robredo rally

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police arrested a man, who posted a bomb threat on his Facebook page, during a political rally of Vice President Leni Robredo in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga.

Robredo, who is running for the presidency in the May polls, was with Mayor Beng Climaco, a political ally and also a member of the Liberal Party, during the rally held at the Pasonanca Park.

Colonel Alexander Lorenzo, the city police chief, confirmed the arrest after they tracked down and located the man’s residence on Thursday evening. He said police were investigating the man, who was a staunch supporter of another candidate.

Lorenzo did not identify the man, but warned the public that police will go after those threatening the peace and order here.

The rally, attended by at least 27,000 people, ended without any incidents, according to Climaco.

Si VP Leni hindi nakalimot tumulong sa oras nang pangangailangan upang makaahon ang bansang Pilipinas,” Climaco, who is also running for congresswoman in District 1, said during the rally.

Robredo - who came all the way from Zamboanga del Norte’s Sindangan town where she also campaigned on Thursday - visited the monument of former mayor Cesar Climaco, the mayor’s uncle and offered flowers and candles.

She also went to meet with supporters at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University for a townhall meeting. “Maraming, maraming salamat po sa AdZU community for inviting us and bringing different sectoral representatives for a townhall meeting. We are thankful for this opportunity and see you all again,” she said. (Zamboanga Post)
