COTABATO CITY - A mob of angry voters mauled an unidentified man on Election Day after he barged inside a polling precinct and destroyed ballots and a vote counting machine in Lanao del Sur’s Binidayan town.
A video clip showed teachers acting as members of the Board of Election Inspectors screaming and seeking help after the man tried to escape. “Sinira niya ang balota,” one teacher shouted as people rushed inside the polling place trashed by the man.
Ballots were scattered all over the place as chaos broke out. A scene from the same video showed people running after the man and catching him several meters away from the precinct. No one had tried to stop the angry mob from beating the man until he was bloodied, his feet tied up to prevent him from running away.
The mauling was recorded on cellphone cameras and shared on social media where it quickly went viral. The clip showed angry civilians hitting the man with sticks. A burst of sporadic gunfire also occurred in the area, but it was unclear whether soldiers who arrived in the scene fired the shots in the air to break the violence.
No other details were available, but elections in Lanao del Sur and neighboring Maguindanao, which are part of the five province-Bangsamoro autonomous region, are traditionally violent. (Mindanao Examiner)
