Army deploys ‘peacekeepers’ for Monday’s polls in Lanao Sur town

MORE THAN  100 soldiers have been deployed in the Lanao del Sur town of Malabang due to intense political rivalries, the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) here said Wednesday.

Malabang, one of the six coastal towns in Lanao del Sur’s first district, was placed under Commission on Elections (Comelec) control due to political tensions among several candidates.

“The Army’s 62nd Reconnaissance Company (62RC), a rapid deployment unit of the 6ID, was sent to Malabang Tuesday,” Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, the 6ID chief and concurrent head of Joint Task Force Central, said in a statement.

The 62RC will augment the local police and the two Marine companies earlier sent by the First Marine Brigade to the area, Uy added.

The town of Tubaran, also in Lanao del Sur, was also placed under Comelec control due to long-standing rivalry among local political clans.

The town is under the Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade of the 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division. (Edwin Fernandez)
