ZAMBOANGA CITY – A lone gunman shot dead a Muslim woman who was a supporter of a mayoral candidate in Zamboanga del Norte’s Sirawai town, police said Sunday.
Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, said the 33-year old Warna Pawai Sala was shot while visiting her relatives in San Vicente village. She said Sala was a supporter of Aljzar Janihim, who is running in Sirawai.
“Initial investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the victim and known supporter of mayoralty candidate of Sirawai Aljzar Janihim was at the house of her relative Arupi Atalad…sitting beside the open door of the house when suddenly an unidentified suspect appeared and shot the victim in the head,” Chang said.
She said the
gunman escaped the shooting. “The suspect immediately fled the area after the
commission of the crime while the victim was immediately brought to Sirawai
Rural Health Unit by her relatives, but was declared dead on arrival by the
attending physician,” Chang said, adding police were investigating the killing.
