Village official wounded in gun attack

PAGADIAN CITY - Gunmen opened fire on a group of people and wounded a villa official in Tabina town in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said.

Police identified the wounded as Elisio Bacuaja who was hit in the arm when seven armed men onboard a pickup truck fired at them. The attack occurred before dawn Saturday while the Bacuaja’s group was talking by the side of the road in the village of Tultolan where the victim is a councilor.

Five others in the group were unhurt in the attack, according to Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, adding the gunmen escaped after the shooting.

She said Bacuaja’s companions rushed him to the hospital after the gunmen fled. The motive of the attack is still unknown, but Chang said the police were investigating the shooting.

It was unclear how the gunmen managed to pass through police and military checkpoints in the town. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the shooting. (Mindanao Examiner)
