ZAMBOANGA CITY - Unidentified gunmen shot dead a former village chieftain who ran and lost in the mayoralty race in the recent election, and his son-in-law in separate attacks in Lamitan City in the Muslim province of Basilan, reports said.
A lone gunman was caught on security camera barging into the house of Ujurun Gappal Jalil and fatally shot him Thursday afternoon in the village of Matibay in Lamitan City.
Jalil was a former village chieftain of Semut in Akbar town where he ran for mayor.
His son-in-law, Wilbert Lao, was also slain by a gunman later in the day in the village of Maganda, also in Lamitan City. Lao was heading home after attending Jalil’s burial when gunned down by a single assailant, who escaped after the shooting.
The motives of both killings were unknown and the victims’ families have not released any statement. It was unclear whether the twin murders were politically motivated or not. (Mindanao Examiner)
