COTABATO CITY – Five members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters surrendered to the Philippine Army in the restive region of Mindanao, officials said Thursday.
Officials said the group also handed over four automatic rifles and a 60mm mortar. Wednesday's surrender was also witnessed by senior military officials in North Cotabato’s Carmen town.
Maj. Gen. Roberto Capulong, commander of the Joint Task Force Central, said the surrender was the result of joint efforts of the 90th Infantry Battalion and the intelligence units deployed in the province.
Capulong did not identify the five men for security reasons, but the army released a photo of the group along with security personnel at the headquarters of the 602nd Infantry Brigade under Col. Jovencio Gonzales.
Army Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command, commended the troops for this accomplishment. “The efforts and sacrifices of our soldiers are being rewarded with the significant breakthroughs in the campaign against terrorism and insurgency in our area of operation,” he said.
No other details of the surrender was made available by the military and it was unknown whether the five men had links with other terrorist groups in the South. (Mindanao Examiner)
