P30-M smuggled poultry seized in Manila port

BUREAU OF Customs (BOC) officers seized PHP30 million worth of smuggled poultry products at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) on Wednesday.

In a statement Friday, Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero said the shipments that arrived in five 40-foot containers were initially declared as hot pot balls and consigned to Lycan Consumer Goods Trading.

He said the shipments were seized after the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS)-MICP received “derogatory information” that the shipments contained frozen chicken products.

Customs Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence Raniel Ramiro received the information, prompting the issuance of the Pre-Lodgement Control Orders (PLCOs) by MICP District Collector Romeo Allan Rosales.

A 100 percent examination of the shipments showed that the shipments contain frozen peeled chicken breast, frozen skinless chicken breast, frozen skinless cut chicken, frozen peeled chicken breast, and frozen chicken skinless big breast.

“We need to act fast if we want to catch up to these groups. My standing order is to not delay the issuance of needed documents that will allow our agents to do their jobs well,” said the BOC chief, who had criticized the latest smear campaign against the bureau.

Rosales is expected to issue a warrant of seizure and detention against the shipment, while Lycan Consumer Goods Trading and its broker will face cases filed by the bureau. (Ferdinand Patinio)
