CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) has warned the public not to buy counterfeit products following reports of fake goods now flooding the market.
IPOPHIL Deputy Director Teodoro Pascua said pirated or counterfeit goods also affect not just the legitimate companies but also the tax collection of the government.
He said consumers' rights will not be totally protected since these items cannot be returned if defective.
Pascua said the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights confiscated billions of pesos worth of counterfeit and fake goods and items the past four years. He urged the public to buy locally-produced items and products to support the local industry.
The
selling of fake products - from pirated movie discs to signature bags and shoes
and even skin lotions - is rampant not only here but also in other parts of the
country, especially in highly urbanized cities. (Jan Albert K. AraƱa)
