Government contractor killed in Zambo ambush

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Motorcycle gunmen killed a government contractor and wounded his companion in an ambush on a village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the attack which occurred Thursday evening in the village of Divisoria killed the 49-year old Alvin Perez, a former policeman; and wounded his companion Danny Belleza.

Perez was driving his car when four gunmen on two motorcycles tailing him opened fire with automatic weapons and pistols. A third passenger, Reggie Bartolome, was unscathed from the ambush.

Police and radio reports said Perez was also a bodyguard of Rep. Mannix Dalipe. The motive of the attack is still unknown, but police said it has started an investigation into the ambush.

The lawmaker has not issued any statement, but his younger brother, Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe strongly condemned the attack and called on the police to “conduct a thorough probe of the incident and to cause the arrest of the perpetrators at the soonest possible time.”

Dalipe also convened the City Peace and Order Council and the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council on Friday morning. “We strongly condemn the shooting incident yesterday and we request for an intensified investigation on the case,” the mayor said during the meeting.

Acting City Police Director Col. Alexander Lorenzo said police investigators are exerting best efforts to establish the identities of suspects as well as the motive of the incident.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the ambush. The family of Perez also did not issue a statement, but the victim’s social media page overflowed with condolences from friends and followers. (Mindanao Examiner)
