PAGADIAN CITY – Unidentified gunmen killed five people and wounded two others in an ambush in the remote Sirawai town in Zamboanga del Norte province in southern Philippines, police said Saturday.
Police said among those killed were the village chieftain of Balubuan Allie Manangca and his family members - Ani Manangca; Alfahad Manangca, Anisa Jaji Manangca and Shilben Basa. While seriously wounded were Alwaf Manangca and Norman Tulino.
The attack occurred ahead of the October 30 Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan elections and police said they were investigating the motive of the January 26 attack in the village called Piña.
Maj. Shellamie Chang, a regional police spokeswoman, said the victims were travelling in a pickup truck when gunmen, hiding behind the bushes on both sides of the dirt road, sprayed them with automatic weapons.
“Initial investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the victims were onboard a grey Toyota Hilux vehicle traveling from Siocon town going to Sirawai proper. Upon reaching the place of incident, they were shot by unidentified armed men,” she said.
Chang said policemen and army soldiers were dispatched to track down the ambushers. (Mindanao Examiner)
