More smuggled onions seized in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police on Friday said it confiscated some 976 bags of red and white onions in fresh operation off a coastal village in the southern Phillippine city of Zamboanga.

Police said the maritime operation was participated by Bureau of Customs, the Intelligence and Investigation Service, the Enforcement and Security Service, including members of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company.

It said the operation managed to intercept a motor launch ML Nordisza off the village of Ayala loaded with contraband and manned by nine crew members.

The boat originated from Tawi-Tawi's Taganak Island near the border of Sabah in Malaysia and heading to the village of Baliwasan here to unload the smuggled onions. 

"A total of 976 mesh bags of red and white onions were seized during the operations. All items and crew members are now in the custody of Bureau of Customs for proper disposition," police said.

Previous reports from authorities claimed each bag of onion weighs about four kilos.

Police did not release the names of the crewmen and the owner of the contraband and its consignee. 

Security forces have seized over 50 tons of smuggled onions the past weeks in Zamboanga, a know entry point of contraband in western Mindanao. (Mindanao Examiner)
