ZAMBOANGA CITY - The Bureau of Customs destroyed tens of thousands of reams of smuggled cigarettes on Friday in the southern Filipino port city of Zamboanga.

It said the contraband - seized in multiple anti-smuggling operations in the South - was worth about P1.4 billion.
The public destruction of the cigarettes was witnessed by local government officials and representatives of various law enforcement agencies and the Philippine Navy and Philippine Army, and other stakeholders.
"The Bureau of Customs Port of Zamboanga, along with the City Government of Zamboanga, partner enforcement agencies as well as other stakeholders destroys a total ot 19,419 cases and 667 reams of smuggled cigarettes worth P1.4 billion," the Bureau of Customs said.
But Customs officials did not identify the owners of the contraband, although it said the illegal cigarettes were seized in Sulu and Zamboanga region. (Mindanao Examiner)
