MARAWI CITY – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has named a veteran army commander who fought pro-ISIS militants here in 2017 as the new Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff.
Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner replaced Gen. Andres Centino, who was also appointed by Marcos as presidential adviser on the West Philippine Sea. Brawner, the chief of the Philippine Army, belongs to the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1989.
The AFP said it welcomes the appointment of
Brawner. “The 145,000-strong AFP shall support the incoming CSAFP who has
proven his sterling leadership and excellent performance of assigned tasks in
the field of AFP operations, modernization and transformation,” it said.
“We also render our snappiest salute to our
outgoing CSAFP, General Andres Centino. We wish him the best and look forward
to working with him in his next position as the Presidential Adviser on the
West Philippine Sea,” it added.
Brawner battled militants who captured Marawi City.
The war lasted about five months, leaving the
city in ruins before troops liberated Marawi. (Mindanao Examiner)
