CEBU – Resort owners who built illegal structures within the easement zone of Looc River in Ginatilan town have asked the Governor Gwendolyn Garcia that they be allowed to do the demolition themselves so they can make use of what can still be salvaged from the ruin.
Jennifer Singco of Green Villas Resort and Pedro
Cabonillas of Fern Valley Cold Spring Resort told Garcia about their request
after she issued Executive Order Number 15 ordering the two mountain
establishments to stop operations until further notice, and for the demolition
of man-made barriers they constructed within the defined 20-meter easement zone
of the river.
The provincial government intervened in the issue
after the town’s council formally endorsed the matter to Garcia's attention and
asked for assistance in its resolution. These man-made barriers have posed a
two-fold problem to neighboring communities as they restrict the free flow of
water and cause water shortage during warm days and pose risk of flooding
during rainy days.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources
and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources will conduct a survey
together with resort owners to determine the extent of the violation before
proceeding with the demolition of the illegal structures.
It was unknown whether Garcia will accede to the
request of Cinco and Cabonillas. (Babie Jane Revecoy)
