Bangsamoro lawmakers push bill to boost tourism

COTABATO CITY — A proposed measure has been filed in the Bangsamoro Parliament that will create a framework for the systematic development and promotion of the tourism industry in the region.

The Parliament Bill No. 261, or the Bangsamoro Tourism Promotion Act of 2023, seeks to boost the local economy and foster unity, peace, and understanding among the diverse communities in the region.

Member of Parliament Amilbahar Mawallil, one of the main authors of the bill, emphasized the transformative potential of preserving cultural heritage, improving tourism facilities, and facilitating diverse tourist activities to position the Bangsamoro region as a welcoming tourist destination.

Key features of the proposed bill include the establishment of a dedicated Bangsamoro Tourism Promotions Board. The board will market and promote the BARMM both domestically and internationally, showcasing its unique offerings, supporting the development of tourism investments, and positioning it as a major convention destination in the country.

The Board will also be tasked with taking the lead in attracting, promoting, facilitating, and servicing large-scale events, including national and internal fairs and conventions, congresses, sports competitions, and expositions.

Additionally, it may also provide incentives to travel agencies that successfully draw tourists to the region, further stimulating tourism-related activities.

The Board will also work with the Bangsamoro Commission on the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, local communities, and cultural organizations to identify, preserve, and promote the cultural tapestry of the region, ensuring that tourism becomes a vehicle for cultural appreciation and sustainable development.

The other main authors of the bill are MPs Dr. Hashemi Dilangalen, Hamid Malik, and Atty. Rasol Mitmug Jr. It is co-authored by Atty. Laisa Alamia, Engr. Baintan Amptuan, Engr. Don Mustapha Loong, Atty. Suharto Ambolodto, and Rasul Ismael. (LTAIS-Public Information, Publication, and Media Relations Division)
