BASILAN – House Deputy Minority Leader Mujiv S. Hataman has filed House Resolution No. 1157, directing the Committee on Legislative Franchise to conduct an investigation into the incessant power outages in Basilan province.
Hataman also said the committee has asked debt-ridden Basilan Electric Cooperative (BASELCO) to submit its financial statement when the inquiry resumes next month following a recent initial investigation. The inquiry seeks to ensure transparency and congressional action into the perennial power shortages in the province, according to the solon.
BASELCO’s outstanding debt now stands at P3.6 billion as revealed by the National Electrification Administration and National Power Corporation during the initial inquiry.
He said the power crisis in Basilan cannot be solved by BASELCO alone. It needs the cooperation of all stakeholders. It was further recommended at the initial inquiry that Baselco’s power transmission lines be placed under total rehabilitation and a total revamp of the cooperative’s management.
Hataman said he will bring up these issues and concerns during BASELCO’s Annual General Membership Assembly to properly inform and guide the power consumers in Basilan on the real status of the cooperative. (Richard Gregorio Falcatan)
