Troops capture Sayyaf fighter, recover cadaver in Sulu

SULU – Army soldiers hunting down Abu Sayyaf rebels have captured one gunman and recovered a cadaver of a militant on Wednesday in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, the military said.

The Western Mindanao Command said Aldie Wajid, a follower of rebel leader Hajan Sawadjaan, was seized by soldiers in Taung village. Wajid’s .45-caliber pistol and a loaded magazine were also recovered by soldiers.

It said Wajid was handed over to the police after an interrogation by soldiers.

Another group of army soldiers who recovered the cadaver buried the remains in Pangkayahan village.

There were no reports of fresh fighting in Sulu, but the military said troops continue their operations, searching for Abu Sayyaf rebels who are still holding several Filipino and foreign hostages in the province.

Abu Sayyaf leaders have pledged allegiance to ISIS and vowed to fight for a separate homeland in the restive South where security forces are also battling terrorism and communist insurgents.

Terror attacks over the past years had killed many civilians while communist rebels have doubled their assaults on military and police targets after accusing President Duterte of insincerity in peace talks. (The Zamboanga Post)

(Rhoderick Benez)

OPINION: Adventurism in Talaingod town by Jun Ledesma

THIS HINTERLAND town is home to gentle and peaceful indigenous tribe – Talaingod. The local and the provincial government have seen to it that their culture and traditions are preserved. Even the curriculum of their education dovetails with these as observed in the Davao del Norte State College- Datu Jose Libayao extension school. The Salugpongan community school supported by the leftist organizations does something else. Something extremely radical is happening in the school reviving that adventurism in the 1960s when cell meetings and teach-ins are covertly conducted with the Red Book as the bible alongside the lessons of dialectic materialism.

We were told by Gov. Anthony del Rosario that Salugpongan had been taken over by leftist elements and took advantage of the frailties of the innocence of the children of the indigenous peoples. The tribal council had since then demanded for the closure of the school as this has become a veritable ground to pursue the communist ideology and training ground for child-armed revolutionaries.
A number of armed encounters were reported in what was once a peaceful mountain town. Some of the tribal leaders were victims of atrocities. We always get conflicting reports.  Communist partylists always beats military in propaganda and would blame the Armed Forces and their para-military units for the deaths of the lumads. Not because they have anything to do with the murder of tribal leaders but they would go through the process of investigation before coming out with their version of incidents. The military and police always are losers in propaganda warfare.

Take the case of the recent incident in Talaingod that hugged the front pages of newspapers and lead story in broadcast networks. There is an apparent attempt at discrediting the AFP even as Ka Satur Ocampo, President of Bayan Muna, and ACT Teacher Rep. France Castro were caught herding school children towards Salugpongan in an unholy hour. Teach-ins, we used to call this before ...or during Ka Satur’s time. This time however, the Red Book of Chairman Mao had become irrelevant considering how modern China has become the 2nd most advanced economy in the world, thus the ideologues of today would rather use video presentation and perverted versions of the national anthem to hypnotize the kids in their leftist adventurism.

Foreign Affairs Sec. Teddy Locsin must have thought that the time lapse when he and Ka Satur were in Congress together had withered his former colleague especially when he had gone through the torturous martial regime and, as the Secretary puts it, “we protected him against warrants of arrests”. Fine. But Locsin should realize that Satur is no longer in the halls of Congress or the streets in Manila where he can shout his slogans and incendiary speeches. This time, his friend Satur, refuses to believe that the China of his time is just a chapter in history and there is no time machine invented to bring them both together at least during their halcyon days in Congress. Satur got stuck in his utopia and he wants to resuscitate this moribund plot by inveigling the innocent tribesmen of Talaingod to embrace his cause.

The military this time caught Satur and his colleagues Red handed. The Lumads, worried about their missing children, denounced the leftist leaders that include a number of protestant pastors (?) for kidnapping their kids. Neither Governor del Rosario nor Mayor Libayao and the tribal chieftain were informed of the activity which the suspects intended to do in that unholy hour of the night when the children ought to be asleep amidst the soporific  monotony of crickets chirps.

That they were there to rescue the children from military atrocity does not stand to reason. That to me, to borrow the word of Locsin, is bullshit. It is no secret however, that children and adults of the various indigenous tribes from Talaingod, in Davao del Norte, Agusan provinces and North Cotabato are pitiable spectacles whenever rallies are staged in Davao City. They bear placards that denounce government, dictatorship of whoever sits in Malacanang and the usual ‘imperyalistang Americano’. Young and innocent children, some barely in their teens bellows the banal slogans so worn out as their slippers, with eyes wide open as they stare at concrete edifices much taller than lawaan trees in their backyards.

But why do they hold rallies in Davao City. For one, in Duterte city they do not need permits to staged rallies. Moreover, they organizers love it here because Davao is not only the center of commerce and trade of the south, it is also the communication center. The demonstrators are covered live nationwide by TV and radio stations and their stories are carried by print media. Perfect outputs for pan-handling NGOs in their solicitation of funds from generous but ignorantly naive donor foundations in Europe, Canada and America.

Satur Ocampo and his comrades are surprisingly out on bail given the existence of martial law  in Mindanao but they should absorb lessons from this experience in that commercialism and ideological adventurism don’t mix. (Jun Ledesma)

Letters to the Editor: Concerns raise over 'Ang Probinsyano'

Dear Editor,

I am concerned with the show, “Ang Probinsyano”.

The prime time show starring Mr. Coco Martin as Cardo Dalisay is indeed a great show considering that masses in country and around the world (through TFC) continue to watch for three long years now. Cardo, a member of the Philippine National Police (PNP), now fights with Pulang Bagani which is a rebel group.

I first thought something was bad with the story last year when I had the chance to watch it while I was on my way home from work. Not until today that I have confirmed not only me notices the romantization of rebellious acts such as those seen in the said show. It appears that Cardo, along with the rest of Pulang Bagani, now becomes the hero and not the authorities to which he initially belonged.

“Ang Probinsyano” has consistently been on top in ratings which means majority of the Filipino households watch it, and this is alarming. Why? Over the years, it has successfully shifted from a pro-government to a pro-rebel show; thus, affecting the viewers’ perception on the existence of rebel groups such as CPP-NPA-NDF.

In real life, they burn establishments, steal goods, occupy lands illegally, and kill one another as well as civilians and government forces. This truth has to be portrayed in the show. I still cannot get over with the death of nine innocent people in Sagay, Negros Occidental.

I call on the PNP to review this show if possible. I have seen in the credits that Police Community Relations Group are acknowledged. I assume that the production of this kind for national TV has to have something that will benefit the government. Yes, “Ang Probinsyano” production is under private management, but the people in and behind it still has the moral duty to the nation as its citizens.

Let’s use it to relay the truth to our fellow countrymen. This is our chance.

Sincerely,
Rich Annika B. Madrillejos

Thank you very much!

Choose to fly unencumbered By Carolina Baro Balmaceda, a Filipino mother

TO THE YOUTH, hope of this land. Study and be better and stronger. Please do not let allow strong hatred to take root in your hearts. Our Nation needs you especially now when we are in dire straits in all aspects of our life together. We need you who are vibrant with life, you who embody a bright future for us all. You can always conquer the dark negativities looming large all around us. In your youth you are blessed such that with your own fresh contribution, you can heal our forever-ailing land.

Please choose to walk the higher ground and lift us all from those years of neglect and abuse carried over to the present when only a few powerful clans and their allies have gained much privilege for themselves. You recall that we fought for the collapse of the Marcos regime with their brand of Martial Law, the tool they used for warped purposes, for selfish ends. But since then, what has changed?

You need only open your eyes so you can close them again in contemplation. Why want to hurt us all with your great outrage targetting the very Institution which is trying its very best to protect and provide for you, to pave a better future for you? Has it not welcomed your ideas and longings, and acted for your welfare?  Ask instead: from all those years since the toppling of that repressive regime, what has been done for the great many of us, for your fellow youth in the very poor provinces outside of Metro Manila? Have the resources been reaching our far-flung areas, distributed so that lives can be actually helped? Ask why the great number of our poor have only turned mendicants begging for any dole outs while they, the rich and secret billionaires in the elite society keep getting richer to even powerfully compete with the ordinary citizens, their businesses sprouting everywhere rounding up and engulfing our meager resources to themselves.

And how about the CPP-NPA-NDF? Unbelievable that you, our dear treasures, are turning blind to their grave atrocities, the activities and the kinds of crimes they devotedly undertake in the provinces, the countrysides. With you seriously aligning yourselves now with their ideology, what are you subjecting us all to?

Our Government has extended its hand to them welcoming them in friendship and forgiveness because that was the will of the people. But even while we were doing that, they went on continually, even to slay some more innocent folks and law-enforcers during the recent Peace Negotiations.  They have pushed hard for power-sharing which our Government  is not at all inclined to favor and accept, not unless it is now your will... and then you would subject us all to an even bleaker future, how unfortunate that we’d have to derail our national aspirations once again and for the nth time.

Playing a role in a dangerous game is not worth giving your precious time to. Fly free so you yourselves can uplift us from the cursed situation we are all in.

Please think, and do not allow the template to forever remain in the hard drive. You can do a lot for our land. (By Carolina Baro Balmaceda, a Filipino mother)
