Cebu teen’s brutal slay solved!

POLICE DECLARED as solved the gruesome murder of 16-year old Christine Silawan whose face was skinned to the bone in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu province following the arrest of her teenage boyfriend.

But two other accomplices were being hunted down by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) which is now the lead agency handling the case, according to national police spokesman Col. Bernard Banac.

Police were also helping the NBI. “There are two other suspects. This is why the PNP continue to extend support to the NBI. We are ready to provide all records to the NBI Regional Office 7 and we expect that this will yield results as soon as possible. As for now, the murder case is solved but not yet closed,” Banac said.

The suspect was arrested following after footage from security cameras showed the 17-year old together with Silawan before she was brutally killed which the NBI said is a “crime of passion.”

“It is because of the suspect's ties with the victim. There is extreme anger or jealousy as far as the suspect's ties with victim is concerned. However, our investigation team won't stop until we uncover the truth,” Banac said.

The NBI has filed criminal charges against the prime suspect in Lapu-Lapu and being a teenager, he was turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Silayan was murdered in the village of Bangkal in Lapu-Lapu. She was stabbed many times and her oesophagus, tongue and trachea were removed, according to the authorities. (Christopher Lloyd Caliwan)

NBI ready to assist in probe of Cebu teen's gruesome murder

THE NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation is ready to assist in resolving the gruesome murder of a teenager, who was found dead - her face skinned to the bone and some organs missing - in Cebu province.

"We'll let the local police take the lead. If they have difficulties (solving the case) I'll ask the NBI (to come in," Justice Secretary Menardo Guevara said.

The 16-year old victim was found without her under garments, raising suspicion that she was raped and then murdered, and skinned to hide her identity. Authorities identified the victim as Christine Silawan, a high school student at the Maribago National High School who was also a volunteer at the local parish.

Silawan was first reported missing after attending a mass and had been found murdered in the village of Bangkal in Lapu-Lapu City. Her brutal killing renewed calls for the re-imposition of the death penalty after it had been abolished many years ago.

Police were still investigating the killing which was condemned by many civil groups, including the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. "The brutal killing of the teenage girl in Lapu-Lapu is an act of pure evil and we call upon our authorities to catch the monsters responsible. We also call upon witnesses to come out and speak for the early resolution of this dastardly act," the IBP-Cebu chapter said.

If given the chance, the lawyers' group said it will provide legal service to "aid in the prosecution of the culprits to this vicious crime when caught". (Benjamin Pulta)
