'Manis Ma Pikilan' wins Best Short Film in 2018 Moro Film Festival
COTABATO CITY – The short film Manis Ma Pikilan has won Best Short Film in the 2018 Moro Film Festival held at the Shariff Kabunsuan Cultural Complex here.
Directed by Bhas Abdulsamad, the film captures the personal struggles of Pahad, a boy from a small coastal community in Tawi-Tawi province, and it tells people, especially those from outside the Muslim autonomous region that Mindanao is not just about war, it also shows the day-to-day sacrifices of the Bangsamoro to live peacefully and happy despite the negative perception by outsiders.
“This film would like to tell the people, especially those people outside the ARMM or Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, that Mindanao is not just about war… that people have their own personal struggles in life,” said Abdulsamad, whose film received P300,000 in cash prize as competition grand winner.
Another film, White Flag, that depicts the story of Omaimah, a young woman who faced great challenges at an evacuation center in Marawi City during the Maute siege, bagged the Grand Jury Prize. White Flag director Najib Alyhar Zacaria - who also won the Best Director Award - was emotional during the awards night. “Hindi ko ma-explain ang nararamdaman ko, ngunit ako ay napakasaya ngayon. This is for my Princess,” he said.
Princess was Zacaria's daughter who died due to a disease while staying inside an evacuation center during the siege. The Grand Jury Prize winner received a total of P150,000 in cash prize and another P50,000 for bagging the Best Director Award.
Aside from the two films, the other top 10 finalists were Identity, Kyuga, Battle of Tampakan, Inged, The Last Kill, Juramentado, Khalil at Manuelito, and Sarimanok. Other awards and the corresponding prizes given during the December 6 culmination of the film festival were:
· Audience choice award – ‘Inged’ (P100,000)
· Best Screenplay – ‘White Flag’ (P30,000)
· Best Cinematography – ‘Manis Ma Pikilan’ (P30,000)
· Best Editing – ‘Manis Ma Pikilan’ (P30,000)
· Best Actor – Abraham Nupuran for 'Manis Ma Pikilan' (P15,000)
· Special Citation for Ensemble Acting – ‘The Last Kill’ (P15,000)
The films were critiqued by renowned filmmakers from Mindanao including Bagane Fiola and Xeph Suarez who served as members of the jury.
Award-winning Moro filmmaker and author Gutierrez 'Teng' Mangansakan II, who chaired the jury, said they were looking for films that tell the stories of Bangsamoro. “A good story is something that comes from within, and these two movies, ‘Manis Ma Pikilan’ and ‘White Flag’, were really able to surface this type of films,” he said.
ARMM Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman congratulated the finalists and winners noting, “ngayon palang ay gumawa na kayo ng pelikula na itatama ang maling kwento ng nakaraan. Ito ang hamon sa lahat ng mga filmmakers, manalo man kayo o hindi... ito ang hamon sa ating lahat.”
Anak Mindanao Executive Director Sitti Djalia Turabin Hataman and actor Robin Padilla graced the awards night. It was the first time for the ARMM to organize a competition that features short films highlighting the history, culture, and tradition of the Bangsamoro. It also showcased the talents of aspiring artists, actors and filmmakers in the region.
The competition is part of the celebration of Pakaradjaan 2018. Public screenings of the top 10 films are scheduled on December 7, 8, and 9 at the Al Nor Cinema 2 here. (Bureau of Public Information)

ARMM celebrates 'final' founding anniversary
COTABATO CITY - The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or ARMM has celebrated Monday what could be its last and final founding anniversary after 29 years of rule over the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao.
And with the January referendum of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman expressed optimism that constituents in the provinces would vote for the establishment of a new Bangsamoro autonomous region.
“Buo ang tiwala ko na ito na ang pinakahuling anibersaryo ng ARMM,” said Gov. Hataman during the celebration held here.
Looking happy yet emotional, Gov. Hataman expressed his gratitude to all the regional government’s partners and stakeholders who have been part of the success of the ARMM. “Hindi ko kayo makakalimutan dahil sa haba ng ating pinagsamahan,” he said.
In the last seven years, the governor stood proud before this crowd stating that his administration has been described as “the youngest, the longest, and the best regional government” in the history of ARMM.
However, Gov. Hataman believes that this year’s celebration of Pakaradjaan is not the end, but the start of new beginnings for the Bangsamoro people through the establishment of the new Bangsamoro government. He urged ARMM constituents to support the incoming new Bangsamoro government and participate in the plebiscite on January 21.
“Kung mababago ang lahat at makakamit natin ang tunay na kapayapaan, sigurado ako, tayong lahat din ang makikinabang,” he said.
ARMM Vice Gov. Haroun Al-Rashid Lucman also said that the celebration is about standing proud in leaving behind the region that has been previously stigmatized as a failed experiment. “ARMM has made a remarkable turnaround to become a responsive, efficient, and effective government,” he said.
Vice Gov. Lucman gave credit to the workforce of the present administration, and most significantly, to Gov. Hataman for his effort in making ARMM far better than it was.
Thousands of employees from the region’s different offices and line agencies participated in a parade to officially open the anniversary celebration. Among those who joined the celebration were Anak Mindanao Executive Director Sitti Djalia Turabin Hataman, Marawi civic leader and senatorial candidate Samira Gutoc, and Basilan Governor Jim Hataman Salliman.
Senator Juan Edgardo Angara, who was represented by his chief of staff, Alfonso Miguel Lima, said on his message: “naniniwala kami na sa pamamagitan ng Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), masisigurado na imbes baril at granada ang itataas, ay libro at lapis; araro at binhi;pala at semento ang hahawakan ng mgaBangsamoro. Ang kapayapaan ay nakakamit kapag ito ay nakapulupot sa kaunlaran.”
He also said the BOL should be seen not as a break, but as a continuation, an evolution, or an expansion, even of the trajectories that have started in ARMM.
Celebrities from Manila – such as singers Jessa Zaragoza, JBK Band, and comedians GB Labrador and Alex Calleja – graced the event to perform and entertain the audience.
Representatives from each of ARMM’s five provinces performed their cultural dance presentations during the program.
ARMM agencies with the most number of contingents and most creative during the parade were also given recognition. These are as follows: 2nd runner up - Department of Education; 1st runner up - Department of Environment and Natural Resources; and winner - Office of the Bangsamoro Youth Affairs and ARMM Development Academy.

ARMM to celebrate last founding anniversary
COTABATO CITY – For the last time, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will mark its 29th founding anniversary on November 19. With the passage of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, it will be replaced next year by the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.
The regional government, anticipating this development since of the start of the year, held a series of activities for the anniversary celebration dubbed the “Pakaradjaan 2018”. Thus, on March 26, thousands of employees and residents of ARMM’s five provinces participated in a simultaneous parade to officially open the Pakaradjaan 2018.
Themed ‘The ARMM Legacy: Exemplifying Good Governance in the Bangsamoro,’ Regional Gov. Mujiv Hataman said this year’s Pakaradjaan highlights the gains of good governance in the region and the diverse heritage of the Bangsamoro people.
And on May 11, the regional government officially opened ‘ARMM Exhibit: Mosques Around the World’, a competition event with participation from the region’s different offices and agencies. Participants constructed three-dimensional miniature replicas of renowned mosques from different parts of the world.
On the same day, the regional government also opened Ramadan Fair 2018 that offered more than 70 booths featuring local food and non-food products. Twenty survivors of the Marawi crisis were provided free slots in the fair. The beneficiaries were small traders who lost their means of livelihood during the Marawi Siege in May last year.
Another highlight of the Pakaradjaan 2018 was the opening of ARMM’s grandest mock ethnic villages on June 18. It showcased a variety of cultures, traditions, history and oneness of the Bangsamoro people. The five cultural villages represented the region’s component provinces namely Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi.
To showcase the different Moro cuisines found in the region’s five provinces, the ARMM held on July 26 a food festival that highlighted the region’s diverse flavors reflecting the culture, cuisine and culinary talents of its people.
Certified foodie and vlogger Erwan Heusaff, celebrity chef Boy Logro, actor-restaurateur Diether Ocampo, ‘BecomingFilipino’ blogger Kyle ‘Kulas’ Jennermann, and Anak Mindanao Executive Director Djalia Turabin Hataman were the judges in the food festival.
On September 5, chieftains of the five mock Moro villages competed in a cooking showdown dubbed as the ‘Pakaradjaan Master Chef-tain’. With an hour to prepare a full-course meal for the judges and another hour to prepare a dish using a special item from a ‘mystery box’ as main ingredient, the chieftains brought out the best dishes their respective provinces offer.
The year-long celebration of the ARMM’s 29th founding anniversary continues with more activities scheduled before the year ends. On November 19, employees of the region will once again participate in an anniversary parade.
A short film competition dubbed ‘Moro Film Festival’ will be shown from December 5 to 6. The film festival will highlight and celebrate the culture, historic past, traditions and heritage of the Moro world. It will culminate on December 7 when a grand prize of P300,000 will be given to the film festival’s winner.
Street dancing and awards night are also lined up during the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival, which will be held on December 19. Meanwhile, Gov. Hataman is set to deliver his last ‘Ulat sa Bayan’, or the State of the Region Address, on December 20. (Bureau of Public Information)
