Duterte threatens to kill Cebu businessman

PRESIDENT RODRIGO Duterte has again threatened to kill Cebu businessman Peter Lim and warned him not to return home following reports that the wealthy trader may have fled the country after being linked by authorities to the illegal drug trade.

“Ikaw Peter Lim ka, 'wag ka talagang magpakita dito sa police, military o ako kasi 'pag nakita kita, papatayin kita,” Duterte said. “Wala akong pakialam. Punta ka doon sa China, balik ka. Bahala ka. Pero 'pag nakita kita dito sa Pilipinas, you're dead.”

Duterte recalled a time when he was still the mayor of Davao City and Lim wanted to speak to him to explain and deny his alleged links to illegal drugs. “Di ba nag-usap kami bago pa akong Presidente. Nakipagkita siya sa akin kasi gusto niyang mag-explain. Sabi niya Mayor, hindi ko magawa. May mga anak ako,”

Duterte remembered Lim as telling him during the meeting. Duterte said that because Lim did not have a criminal case filed against him or arrest warrant yet, he just listened to his explanation.

However, Duterte said had there been a case or arrest warrant against Lim, he might have done things differently. “Eh wala pa kasing kaso noon na may warrant eh. Kaya kung noon 'yung panahon na 'yon may warrant na siya, pagkatapos ng interview barilin ko na siya doon sa hagdana,” Duterte explained.

Duterte earlier called Lim to just kill himself rather than surrender to the authorities. “I am warning yung mga nasa Visayas. Peter Lim, if I were you, I would commit suicide, never ever surrender to me alive, you will commit suicide. I-abbreviate mo na, ikaw pa magtali sa leeg mo,” he said.

No lead on Peter Lim so far: DOJ

THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE said the government has yet to get fresh leads on the whereabouts of Cebu businessman and suspected drug lord Peter Lim.

“There are no lead(s) on Lim so far,” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said. In September, the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed the petition filed by Lim's lawyers last June in connection with his indictment on drug charges.

In a minute resolution, the High Court's Third Division said Lim failed to show any grave abuse of discretion in rendering the challenged order and resolution of the DoJ against him.

The SC added that the assailed DOJ orders which charged Lim “appear to be in accord with the facts and the applicable law and jurisprudence.”

The members of the DOJ prosecution panel who pursued the charges against Lim were Assistant State Prosecutor Juan Navera, Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Anna Noreen Devanadera and Prosecution Attorney Herbert Babugan.

At a Senate hearing on December 5, 2016, self-confessed drug distributor Kerwin Espinosa identified Lim as one of his drug suppliers, an allegation which the Cebuano millionaire denied.

In August 2017, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group filed a case against Lim, Espinosa and six others for alleged drug trafficking. And a court ordered Lim’s arrest after finding probable cause against him. (Benjamin Pulta)
