Zamboanga bans pork from Luzon, Mindanao provinces
ZAMBOANGA CITY has banned the entry of pork from Luzon and many provinces in Mindanao where there are reported cases of the African swine fever or ASF.

Stiftung Solarenergie Philippines brings ‘bright’ hope to Sarangani community
SITIO LAGINAN in Malungon town in Mindanao’s Sarangani province has been chosen to be a model of rural communities to access sustainable solar energy solutions by Stiftung Solarenergie Philippines (StS).
Because of its inaccessibility, electricity in Laginan has not yet been installed for many years. And now, StS partnered with Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Philippines) to help raise funds to help bring electricity to the community. From August to October 14, 2018, they have gathered a total of P2,128,979 to provide solar panel to the homes in Laginan in the village of Lutay.
The installation of solar panels on December 1-5, gratified 70 households that were presented by Sitio Laginan and Tagakaulo Women Association. The turn-over was also participated in by the Provincial Governor’s Office—Sulong Tribu. As part of convergence, Sulong Tribu will implement agriculture and cultural projects in the area.
The donor of solar panels, Coffee Bean Tea Leaf, will also support the coffee production of the community through marketing and promotion.In 2016, StS initially donated four solar cases to Laginan Integrated School which sits on top of a mountain.
The school caters to a total of 331 students from kindergarten to Grade 10. Sulong Tribu project coordinator Celito Terando said “there are other communities that we wanted to model.” “Nangita gyud mi ug community nga haom, eksakto ang proyekto (We were looking for a community that fits, the project just right) and we recommended Sitio Laginan because of their receptivity also to government projects,” Terando said.
Laginan is a remote sitio located in the mountain ranges. The population comprises 90% Tagakaolo and the rest is Blaan tribe. Their main livelihood here is farming where corn, coffee, abaca, and vegetables are the major crops. To reach Laginan, it would take an hour and 30-minute motorcycle ride from the town proper to reach its adjacent sitio Dalamuan, which is about 15 kilometers or approximately 6 to 8 hours trek or, a faster 3 to 4 hours horse ride to finally reach Laginan.
This situation also goes for the students who live far from the Laginan. Most of them walk 3 to 5 hours to reach the school, and as well as going home. Angelo Tamesa, 19, a Grade 10 student, is eager to study despite of the hardship. “Magmata mi sa kaadlawon tig alas dos, mangaon mi tig alas tres. Naa mi’y maagihan sapa, diha mi maligo. Human namo ligo mga alas singko, maabot mi diri mga alas nuwebe o alas otso y medya (We wake up at 2’o clock in the morning and eat at 3a.m. If we happen to pass by the river, we take our bath there. After taking our bath probably at 5 a.m., we arrive here maybe at 9 or 8:30a.m),” Tamesa said.
“Gusto gid nako kuhaon nga course kay pagkapulis kay akong ginikanan naga pangandoy gyud to sila nga makapadayon ko ug eskwela kay kami ra’y pag-asa nila (I really want to get a police course because my parents really wish that I continue to go to school since we are their only hope.” StS previously installed solar panels in different municipalities of Sarangani: Glan (8 units), Malapatan (5 units), Alabel (6 units), Malungon (15 units), Maasim (3 units), Kiamba (4 units), and Maitum (3 units).
The StS is also known as Foundation for Rural Electrification for Economic Development (FREED) which is a non-profit organization aimed to empower rural and marginalized villages throughout the Philippines by providing access to sustainable solar energy solutions. “What we would try to do is light up, provide a solar system for the homes of the children so that they could study at night, and at the same time use solar to be able to encourage the parents to support the education of the students such as reduction of malnutrition through vegetable gardening program,” StS executive director Bambi Reyes said.
Aside from empowering education, they also wanted to help and make changes towards communities, health, and emergency response.
The process also includes trainings and meetings in the communities they cater on how to use the solar cases and how to fix them in case of malfunction. After installation, they regularly monitor the areas on how the solar cases affect the beneficiaries’ lives. “Pag-abot aning proyekto (2016), dako kaayo ang natabang (This project was really a great help when it arrived in 2016). Number 1 is pagprepare sa mga lesson plan and visual aids, prepared name sa among mga lessons pagka-ugma,” said teacher Albert Rhyen Tapitan of Laginan Integrated School.
Tapitan added that it is now easier for them to contact the nearest town in case of emergency because they can charge their phones. And Sulong Sarangani Program continues to forge partnership with Stiftung Solarenergie Philippines for possible electrification of the whole rural community. (Donna Mahusay)

Sarangani govt. targets more villages for ‘zero open defecation’
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The provincial government of Sarangani is pushing for the declaration of more villages this year under the “zero open defecation” or ZOD status as it aims to provide more households with access to basic toilet facilities.
Dr. Arvin Alejandro, head of the Sarangani provincial health office, said they are currently working on the expansion of the ZOD program to more villages, especially in the remote areas.
He said as of last year, 72 out of the 141 villages in seven municipalities already have ZOD status. “That’s about 80 percent of our barangays so far,” Alejandro said. He said they have validated four more villages last January and more will be added to the list in the coming months, adding, they are currently working on the declaration of Alabel town under the ZOD status as it already posted a rating of over 90 percent, followed by Maasim in the next six months.
The provincial government initially declared the entire Malungon town under ZOD status in 2016, according to Alejandro. Since the ZOD program started in 2015, he said the provincial government already spent around P2.1 million for the production of concrete toilet bowls and were distributed by the local government through the rural health units to identified households that have no basic toilet facilities.
The initiative was implemented in partnership with the Department of Health and the United Nations Population Fund. Alejandro said the campaign for ZOD took off as a strategy to address the rising cases of admissions on acute gastroenteritis among residents. From 1994 to 2014, he said around 1,000 cases of acute gastroenteritis were recorded in the province annually and cost the local government P6 million per year based on the P6,000 case rate set by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.
Around 28,000 households were documented in 2014 to have no toilets, which accounts for an estimated 4 million tons of human wastes a year. Alejandro said some 65 villages already have active local health boards and have established their sanitation action plans. Through its water and sanitation program, he said they are currently working on the activation of sanitation task forces in the municipal level. (Beverly Paoyon)

Bong Go recalls humble start with Duterte
SARANGANI - “I was asked to run an errand.” This was how former Special Assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go recalled his humble beginnings with President Rodrigo Duterte, in a speech that was delivered in Alabel town in Sarangani province.
Presently, Sarangani is celebrating its 16th MunaTo Festival, which derived its name from the Blaan words for “first people,” in honor of the makers of ancient burial jars that were discovered in the province in 1991.
Go’s speech was part of “The Platform,” a set of talks hosted by Sarangani province governor Steve Chongbian-Solon. The Friday event was patterned after the popular TED Talks model.
Solon invited Go to talk about his role as “tulay sa pangulo” (bridge to the president) and to share his vision for the country. Solon hoped Go would “inspire our audience, who mostly are local officials.”
Go shared that by working for Duterte, he learned the true meaning of service. “Our society makes us believe that for us to have a great impact on the world around us, we must be at the top, we must be the number one, or we must be the best. From Tatay Digong, I learned the opposite. Instead of trying to outdo everyone else, we must find our own place and perform our duties with humility and integrity.”
He clarified that he did not leave the president’s side to merely make a name for himself. “My senatorial bid is an extension of my service to him and to the Filipino people,” Go said, adding, that like Duterte, who had no plans of running for president originally, he also had no political ambitions before, but realized that he must be in the legislative branch of the government to further help the administration carry out its programs and projects. He says that he is “more than ready to take on greater responsibilities and challenges.”
“Whatever power we are privileged to have, we should just do the best that we can,” Go added. “We should be committed and worthy of trust.”
Aside from Go, other notable experts who also participated in “The Platform” include Gina Lopez, former secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Another highlight of the day was Bong Go’s interview, which focused on his mindset and immense personal desire to be of service to people all over the Philippines and not just in Davao City, his hometown. Numerous times in his interview, Go mentioned that his “bisyo ay serbisyo” (vice is service) and he expresses concerns for particular national issues such as the plight of OFWs, agriculture, food security, and easing the processing of government documents. Furthermore, he emphasized that he will not give up in expressing as well as showing just how much he loves to serve his fellow Filipinos.
It can be surmised that all Bong Go wants is to be of service to his nation, The Philippines.

Pro-ISIS leader slain in southern Philippines
GENERAL SANTOS CITY – A pro-ISIS militant leader was killed in a firefight with Filipino soldiers in Sarangani province in the restive southern region of Mindanao, the army said Tuesday.
It said Basser Sahak was slain in Daliao village in Maasim town where troops tracked him down on Monday. Sahak, whose group Ansar Al-Khilafah Philippines, was being linked by the 1002nd Infantry Brigade to the spate of bombings and other recent atrocities in General Santos City.
“Sahak was responsible for the series of atrocities and bombings. He was one of the suspects charged with multiple frustrated murders in connection to the IED explosion that transpired last September 16, 2018 at Purok Malipayon in Barangay Apopong in General Santos City that injured at least 8 individuals,” it said.
The army said Sahak’s group is also an ally of the Dawla Islamiya militants under Abu Toraife who operate in Maguindanao, Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces.
Troops recovered an automatic rifle, ammunition and improvised explosives from Sahak’s hideout. His body was handed over to village and municipal officials.
Brig. Gen. Roberto Ancan, the brigade commander, said operation continues to track down other militants as he vowed to crush ISIS-inspired groups terrorizing peaceful communities in the region.
“We intend to defeat ISIS-inspired groups, like the AKP, by isolating them in order to apply focused military operations and avoid collateral damage,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Noel Clement, commander of 10th Infantry Division, praised the soldiers for neutralizing Sahak. “With the people's participation in our campaign against terrorism, we can detect, locate and neutralize terrorists. In this way, any possible threat will always be dealt with accordingly,” he said from his headquarters in Davao City. (Mindanao Examiner)
