Covid cases rising again in Zambo!

MAYOR BENG Climaco expressed alarm over the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Zamboanga and appealed anew to the public to take extra measures to protect themselves from the deadly respiratory disease that had killed at least 8 people here.

Coronavirus cases here spiked after the national government allowed the return of thousands of stranded persons (LSIs) and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and even deportees (ROF) from Sabah, to their places of origin as part of the program introduced by Senator Bong Go.

Zamboanga - which is under the more relaxed Moderate General Community Quarantine status since the start of this month after 3 months of strict Enhance Community Quarantine - now has at least 6 dozen active Covid cases.

“As we have all anticipated, the opening of commercial flights, the entry of local stranded individuals and returning overseas Filipinos, and the easing of restrictions will put the city at greater risk for illnesses due to Covid-19,” Climaco said. “Nohay kita falta na de aton maga aviso con el publico. Necesita gayot el suporta y cooperacion de todo amediante este pandemia.”

Just recently, Climaco met with Regional Health Director Dr. Emilia Monicimpo, City Health Officer, Dr. Dulce Miravite and Councilor Jimmy Villaflores, the mayor’s action officer on health; and the chiefs of different hospitals here, as well as the representative of the local chapter of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines and discussed further preparations amid the spike in Covid-19 cases.

She also had a meeting with City Police Director Colonel Thomas Joseph Martir and Task Force Zamboanga Commander Colonel John Divinagracia, City Administrator Apple Go and Councilor Josephine Pareja and discussed the strict implementation of MGCQ guidelines.

Many residents had been reported to have violated the health protocols, especially the wearing of face masks in public places, and for not carrying their quarantine pass. Dozens of motorcycle riders were also apprehended carrying passengers which is not allowed by the national task force on Covid-19.

Climaco reminded residents to always carry their quarantine pass if they go out for work or to buy essential goods. “The (use of) quarantine pass will continue to be in effect under MGCQ for all residents to manage the influx of crowds in accessing essential goods and services at the malls, public markets, supermarkets, groceries and pharmacies and other essential business establishments.”

“The prohibition in back-riding in motorcycles is a national IATF guideline and the City Government is just complying with the order. We understand the concern and demands for its lifting but the City cannot do otherwise but to follow it, as it is a national law and forms part of the health protocol to fight against Covid-19,” she said.

Climaco said residents should all the more be compliant of quarantine guidelines and follow the minimum health standards. “Strict compliance of the guidelines and the minimum health standards should be a personal responsibility of each and every resident of the city,” she said.

Like a scene from Wuhan

Last week, two men were rushed to hospital after they collapsed one after the other in downtown Zamboanga and panicking people near them amid the rising number of coronavirus cases here.

Policemen and civilians were spotted trying to revive one man - as he was gasping for air - and unaware whether he was stricken with the deadly viral disease.

Ambulance workers clad in protective suit quickly removed the two men on stretchers and both remain unidentified. It was not immediately known why the two collapsed or if they are carrying the virus that had killed at least 8 people here with the latest fatality recorded only on Saturday.

The scene was reminiscent of what had happened in the Chinese city of Wuhan where the virus originated in December last year. People were collapsing on the streets due to Covid-19.

Climaco told residents to maintain cleanliness and avoid holding their face, nose, mouth and eyes and frequently wash hands with soap and water, and always wear face mask and observe physical distancing – at least a meter apart from each other in public places.

“We continue to appeal to the public to remain vigilant, strictly comply with MGCQ guidelines and continuously practice minimum health standards - wear face mask, frequently wash hands, observe physical distancing and avoid non-essential movement or activities,” she said.

LSIs, ROFs

Just this month, hundreds of residents stranded from other places and OFWs had arrived here by bus from Cagayan de Oro City, and dozens of deportees from Sabah were ferried back home.

The local deportees were immediately brought to a quarantine facility as part of the strict health protocols before they are sent home.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said the first batch of 395 deportees and 300 of them disembarked in Tawi-Tawi, had undergone Covid-19 rapid testing in Sabah prior to their departure, but they still need to undertake coronavirus testing again when they reach the country as part of the government’s health protocols.

Sabah is set to deport some 5,300 Filipinos illegally staying in the rich Malaysian state just several hours by boat from Tawi-Tawi. They are now being held at four congested jails after it temporarily suspended the repatriation since March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. (Zamboanga Post)
