ZAMBOANGA MAYOR Beng Climaco joined President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for unity as the country continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
“This pandemic calls for a united country to heal together as one. We pray for our President, for all our leaders and frontliners and for the safety of everyone in these trying times! Vaya con Dios!” said Climaco, who was invited to attend Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA).
In the SONA, Duterte also praised all those who sacrificed their lives – the frontliners and said: “Let us express the nation’s gratitude to those who courageously and willingly put their lives on the line to serve the people and country. We share the grief of their families and no amount of tears can compensate their great losses.”
And recognized efforts of the local government units (LGUs) in battling the pandemic. “Let me also recognize the efforts of the local government units that stepped up and initiated their own response measures to contain the effects of Covid-19 and its impact to their constituents.”
“I know exactly the difficulties you are undergoing. I pray that the officials of each LGU in our country – from the barangay to the autonomous regions – would set aside partisan politics and selfish interests to do what is right and good for all,” Duterte said.
Climaco also reflected on Duterte’s statement and called on everyone to put politics aside and help instead in ensuring the welfare of the people.
The Philippines now has over 55,000 active Covid cases with the National Capital Region, Laguna, Cebu, Cavite and Davao del Sur as among the highest number of coronavirus infection.
Zamboanga City has also recorded more than 250 active coronavirus cases, according to the local task force Covid-19 headed by Climaco.
Climaco has repeatedly appealed to residents to strictly follow the quarantine guidelines and observe physical distancing and the wearing of face mask when in public places.
The spike in Covid cases here started when the national government allowed the return of locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including deportees from Sabah.
Zamboanga recorded its last community Covid transmission early in April, but infection continued among prisoners at the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center. And this was aggravated by the return of the LSIs and the “Balik Probinsya Program” introduced by Senator Bong Go.
Now, over 30 of Zamboanga’s 98 barangays have reported Covid cases - San Jose Gusu Santo Nino, Calarian Santa Maria, Camino Nuevo, Campo Islam, Mampang, Arena Blanco, Baliwasan, Cabatangan, Canelar, Cawit, Culianan, Divisoria, Kasanyangan, Labuan, Maasin, Mercedes, Pasonanca, Putik, Salaan, San Jose Cawa-Cawa, San Roque, Sangali, Sinunuc, Sta. Barbara, Santa Catalina, Talon-Talon, Tetuan, Tugbungan, Tumaga, Zambowood, Zone I, Zone II, and Zone IV.
City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite also confirmed the sudden increase in the number of Covid cases was due to the influx of LSIs, and local community transmissions.
“Covid-19 infections does not choose whom to infect. All of us are at risk of getting infected,” Miravite said noting the disease has infected individuals of all ages, from all walks of life and profession.
She echoed Climaco’s repeated appeals for residents to always practice the minimum public health measures of wearing face mask, regular hand washing, and physical distancing.
“We will have to live with COVID for a while until a vaccine will be available. Let us care for each other, let us protect each other,” Miravite said. (Zamboanga Post. With additional report from Jasmine Mohammadsali.)
