NORTHERN SAMAR 1st District Rep. Paul Daza said on Wednesday night that he has contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Daza, who is confined in a hospital in Metro Manila after testing positive for the virus on August 25, asked those who had interacted with him in Northern Samar from August 16 to 24 to get in touch with local health authorities.
In a Facebook post, he said he went around the towns in his district and met with local officials, community leaders, and residents.
On the night of August 16, Daza said he started “feeling unwell”, just more than a week after he arrived in Northern Samar from Manila to monitor the situation in his area.
Before heading to the province, he said he had a swab test and was found negative of the virus.
“Mindful of the need to observe and isolate myself, I continued to work from our house in Daganas (in Catarman, Northern Samar) and did not go outside anymore. I also took medications prescribed by our local doctors,” Daza said. “Because I continued to feel sick, I traveled back to Manila on August 24 on the advice of the doctors. I went straight to the hospital for examination and tests.”
He said he has instructed his staff in Congress and the Daganas field office to immediately initiate thorough contact tracing in coordination with local officials and health authorities.
Daza, a former governor, and son of retired veteran politician Raul Daza, is the fourth member of the House of Representatives to get infected with Covid-19.
In Eastern Visayas, he is the third government official to announce that he has contracted the disease.
Last week, Catbalogan City Mayor Dexter Uy and his elder sister, former mayor and incumbent councilor Stephany Uy Tan, announced that they had Covid-19.
The two, who are both asymptomatic, are under quarantine at their city's Covid-19 isolation facility. (By Sarwell Meniano and Roel Amazona)
