ZAMBOANGA CITY – The number of patients recovering from the deadly Covid-19 respiratory disease here continues to increase as the local government sustains its battle to stop the further spread of the coronavirus.
Mayor Beng Climaco, who heads the local task force against Covid-19,reported that those who recovered from the disease are nearing 600 since the start of the pandemic in March.
She said the Covid-19 death toll is only 4% of the total number of coronavirus cases here which is a little over 1,000. Most of those who succumbed to Covid-19 had underlying illnesses or medical condition.
The active Covid-19 cases are at least 400, mostly due to community transmission. Of the 400 patients, about five dozen of them are locally stranded individuals who recently returned home from various places where there are large numbers of coronavirus infection, according to Climaco.
She again reminded residents to always observe physical distancing and wear face mask and face shield when in public places, and to frequently sanitize or wash hands with soap and water.
“Let us not forget the health protocols and (community) quarantine guidelines and please, as I always remind everyone to wear a face mask and face shield, observe physical distancing and wash hands with soap and water or sanitize them. Avoid holding your face – eyes, nose and mouth – and that is the best way to prevent (Covid-19) infection and most of all, pray to God that He protect us from this disease,” Climaco said.
She also thanked all medical frontliners and barangay health workers and barangay captains for their dedication to serve and even risk their own health to save others.
“There are no words to express my gratitude to all those who work hard to protect and save the others. I thanked you all for your bravery and love for the others,” Climaco said.
Last week, Climaco said as part of the“whole of government” approach to tackle the pandemic and more effective reporting of Covid statistics, the local government will soon launch a dedicated site for all related data.
She said the local government will put up the Zamboanga City Covid-19 Data Center and it will be a one-stop repository and online tracker that will synchronize and centralize Covid-19 management data such as real-time updates for confirmed coronavirus cases, testing numbers, case mapping in barangays, and other relevant information.
The online tracker, according to the mayor, will also highlights up-to-date count of confirmed and suspected Covid-19 cases, including the breakdown of cases according to type, identification, sex, age and status.
“It will also have data and figures for the occupancy status of quarantine and isolation facilities and private and public hospitals as well as the inventory of equipment, supplies and PPEs in hospital establishments,”she said, adding, a contact tracing form and a database of all Covid-19 related executive orders will also be made accessible to the public.
Climaco said the Zamboanga City Covid-19 Data Center is part of the local government’s continued efforts to fight the spread of the disease in all fronts, and ensure the dissemination of relevant, timely, and important information amid the spread of fake news and false information this time of crisis.
She said the project is a joint undertaking of the Computer Services Division of the Office of the City Mayor, the Research, Evaluation and Statistics Division of the Office of the City Planning and Development Coordinator, and the Surveillance Unit of the Office of the City Health Officer. The technical assistance in the development of the tracker is also provided by the Ateneo De Zamboanga University, the National Resilience Council and the Local Government of Baguio City.
