ZAMBOANGA CITY Mayor Beng Climaco said the local government is now seriously looking into the establishment of walking paths and bicycle lanes residents in preparation for the “new normal” measures amid the health crisis brought about by the Cobid-19 pandemic.
Climaco said the establishment of bicycle lanes is also pursuant to the order of Interior Secretary Eduardo Año who said the national government is encouraging citizens to consider bicycles as the new primary mode of transportation.
Año issued Memorandum Circular 2020-100 which directs and provides guidelines for local governments to establish a network of cycling lanes and walking paths.
Under the guidelines, local government units will revisit and improve existing transportation plans to prioritize the establishment of lanes dedicated for active transport and light mobility.
“Yung bicycle, pino-promote natin na maging primary mode of transportation. Mag-uutos ulit tayo sa lahat ng LGUs, mag-establish ng bike lanes sa lahat ng mga thoroughfares. In this new normal, we want to encourage everyone to use bikes. Very safe ang bikes, at saka, matipid pa. Hindi mo na kailangan bumili ng gasolina,” Año said.
Climaco, who advocates physical fitness, said biking promotes good health and a good workout because it uses all major muscle groups as you pedal.
Quoting Better Health Channel, she said unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. It increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness. It is also time-efficient and as a mode of transport, cycling replaces sedentary (sitting) time spent driving motor vehicles or using jeepney or tricycle - with healthy exercise.
It said cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.
The health benefits of regular cycling include increased cardiovascular fitness, increased muscle strength and flexibility, improved joint mobility, decreased stress levels, improved posture and coordination, strengthened bones, decreased body fat levels, prevention or management of disease and reduced anxiety and depression.
But Climaco reminded that bikers or cyclists must always wear face masks and proper safety gear such as helmet, among others. (Zamboanga Post)
