DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña said the project was in collaboration with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the DOST created that monument using acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, a strong polymer material, and was also reinforced with an internal steel structure.
The monument stands 12.5 feet tall and was made from a
material that could withstand impact and high temperature, ultraviolet rays,
and has chemical resistant quality. “It was designed to withstand 330 kph winds
and a magnitude 7 earthquake,” he said.
The unveiling of the monument also coincided with the 125th anniversary of Rizal’s execution by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion at Bagumbayan Field (present-day Rizal Park) in Manila on Dec. 30, 1896. (Maria Cristina Arayata)
