Man transporting explosives nabbed in Davao City

DAVAO CITY – Authorities are holding a 22-year old man who was transporting improvised explosives and a fragmentation grenade in Davao City in southern Philippines.
The man, Roy Moreno, was in a commuter van when soldiers manning the checkpoint in Toril district discovered the explosives late Friday. The army said the man a native of Kidapawan City who was enroute to Davao with the explosives.
No other details were available by the army about the man except that he belongs to an indigenous tribe in southern Philippines. It was unknown if Moreno is a member of the communist rebel group New People’s Army which is actively operating in Davao.
Moreno is being interrogated and he did not give any statement to the press about the explosives or why he was transporting them and for whom.
Security is tight in the troubled region of Mindanao where military forces are battling communist insurgents and jihadist groups blamed for the spate of deadly attacks in the South that had forced thousands of civilians to flee for their safety. (Mindanao Examiner)
