Sayyaf ambush wounds 4 in Sulu

SULU - Abu Sayyaf militants ambushed a police patrol and wounded 4 people in the southern Filipino province of Sulu, officials said Thursday.

Officials said the attack occurred Wednesday night in the village called Buhangin in Patikul town where 3 policemen and a government militia were left wounded.

The ambush sparked a firefight and only stopped when militants fled the area after army soldiers rushed to the village to rescue the cops. There was no report of Abu Sayyaf casualties, but the town is a known lair of the pro-ISIS group fighting for the establishment of a caliphate in the troubled Muslim region.

The group, which has been largely blamed for the spate of ransom kidnappings in Sabah, is also holding 3 Indonesian fishermen in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region. (Zamboanga Post)
