Go Green! Zambo to get its first-ever hydroelectric power plant

ZAMBOANGA WILL soon have its first-ever hydroelectric power plant after the Department of Energy and the local government broke ground signalling the start of the project.

The 1.7 MW power plant project will be undertaken by Everhydro Corporation in Sitio Tagpangi in Barangay Vitali and expected to provide electricity to the nearby communities.

The ground breaking ceremony held recently was attended by Vice Mayor Rommel Agan, Rep. Mannix Dalipe, Atty. Marissa Cerezo of the Department of Energy, Zamboanga Economic Zone and Freeport Authority chairman Raul Regondola, Councilors Jimmy Villaflores, Josephine Pareja, Mike Alavar, Bong Atilano, John Dalipe and barangay officials headed by Vitali chieftain Jose Alavar.

Mayor Beng Climaco, an environmentalist and a strong advocate for renewable energy, first tackled the hydroelectric power plant when it was proposed by Everyhydro Corporation in 2016. And she immediately convened the Watershed Management Council (WMC) to tackle issues related to the condition and status of the watershed and review and deliberate on the project.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources also co-chairs the WMC with Climaco and it coordinates actions to protect and preserve the watershed which is the main source of Zamboanga’s drinking water.

Locals have long complained about the poor services of the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (ZAMCELCO). Consumers and businesses here continue to suffer from power surges and outages and poor utility services.

Aside from power outages, ZAMCELCO’s irregular supply of electricity here resulted in low voltage most of the time and residents blamed the utility firm for damages on their appliances.

Last year, Climaco also urged ZAMCELCO board members to “represent the true voice of the people” and asked them to conduct a thorough review of all existing contracts entered into by the cooperative with power producers after the Crown Investments Holdings, Inc. and Desco Inc. took over the cooperative in January 2019.

The Crown Investments Holdings, Inc. and Desco Inc. bailed out the heavily-indebted and poorly-managed electric cooperative for P2.5 billion.

“The review on all ZAMCELCO’s contracts is necessary to ensure the cooperative’s operation is effective and responsive to the needs of its member-consumers and making sure that it is financially viable and technically capable,” the mayor said. (Zamboanga Post)
