ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two elderly residents here have died due to pneumonia and heart attack as health authorities wait for coronavirus test results of swab samples it took from the duo whether their deaths were due to the deadly virus, also called Covid-19.

Mayor Beng Climaco said a 75-year old man from the village of Tumaga died on Friday due to community acquired pneumonia. She said the man was also diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had taken treatment for tuberculosis.
“Three days ago, he developed non-productive cough with difficulty in breathing, hence rushed to hospital. He expired 3 a.m. on April 3, Friday, due to community acquired pneumonia,” she said.
Climaco said another 69-year old woman, who also died Friday, after developing “non-productive cough” and loose stools five days ago which eventually worsened. She was rushed to hospital, but died due to heart attack.
She said both patients had no history of travel and no known comorbidities.
Because they reside in barangays where there are positive Covid-19 cases, the two senior citizens were categorized as persons under investigation and are subjects of confirmatory test for coronavirus disease,” Climaco said.
Zamboanga City has 3 Covid-19 patients - a 30-year old woman in Tetuan village; a 48-year old woman from Tumaga village, and a 29-year old man from the village of Sinunuc. All are now in hospital.
The local government imposed an enhanced community quarantine since last month to stop the spread of the virus that has infected over 3000 people in the country and had already killed more than 11 dozen more, mostly in metropolitan areas in Luzon and the number of infected people continue to increase with no signs of the virus contamination slowing down.
Climaco also prohibited the elderly and children to go out of their house because they are most vulnerable to the disease. She appealed again to residents to maintain cleanliness by washing hands with soap and water more often, and to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth. (Zamboanga Post)
