33 unclaimed cadavers buried in Zambo

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Nearly three dozen cadavers which remained unclaimed since last year were ordered buried Monday by the local government in a mass grave in a remote village here called Talabaan.

Photos released by the Zamboanga City Government shows a priest saying a prayer and behind him are the coffins of the cadavers before they are buried in a mass grave.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Salazar said the cadavers were given a decent burial following a prayer by a Catholic priest. She said the bodies had been in a private morgue for a year now and that most of the bodies were crime victims and those found in deserted areas while others died of natural causes in public hospitals or streets.

Local social welfare officer Maria Socorro Rojas who facilitated the mass burial said 25 of the dead were male and the rest all women and a fetus. “No relatives or friends claimed the remains since they were turned over to the city-contracted morgue,” she said.

She said the local government shouldered the expenses for embalming, storage and coffins. “Regardless of their religious affiliation and circumstances of death, the cadavers deserved decent burial,” she said. (Zamboanga Post)
