TAWI-TAWI - The southern Philippine towns of Bongao and Turtle Islands in Tawi-Tawi province continue to play a “big role” in barter trading and the recently opened sea route between here and the state of Sabah in Malaysia.

Ysmael “Mang” Sali who visited Sabah in March with Bangsamoro Parliament Deputy
Speaker Benjamin Loong and Bongao Mayor Jimuel Que and Turtle Islands Mayor
Mohammad Faizal Jamalul and met with Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji
Noor and other key government officials.
Sali said Bongao, the capital town of
Tawi-Tawi, and Turtle Islands are “the two primary municipalities playing a big
role in barter trading and the newly opened sea connectivity route between the
province and Sabah, particularly the direct route of M/V Prince Khalil from
Bongao to Lahad Datu town.
The governor updated Datuk Seri about
the progress and developments on the economic and the sisterhood relationship
between the Tawi-Tawi and Sabah during their exclusive meeting spearheaded by
Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, Sabah Special Envoy for BIMP-EAGA.
The meeting also discussed various
issues, mostly on bilateral trades and also the plight of illegal and deported
Filipinos from Sabah, who are mostly from Tawi-Tawi. Both parties commit
to working together to come up with sustainable and mutually beneficial programs
that would help the returning Filipinos for their placement in Sabah.
Sali thanked Sabah officials for
their warm hospitality and fruitful discussions and even invited them to “visit
and experience” Tawi-Tawi. (Mindanao Examiner)
