Navy rescues 7 people from ill-fated Tawi-Tawi boat

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Philippine Navy patrol has rescued 7 people whose boat nearly sank after huge waves battered the vessel off the southern province of Tawi-Tawi, officials said Tuesday.

Rear Admiral Rene Medina, chief of the Naval Forces in Western Mindanao, said the ill-fated boat, which came from the capital town of Bongao, was loaded with lumber and heading to the island-town of Sitangkai when it developed engine trouble and tossed by giant waves.

He said one of their patrol vessels, PC387, spotted the boat, ML Jomong, and quickly rescued the passengers and brought them back to Bongao for medical examination.

“PC387 immediately manuevered to the direction of the ill-fated boat and conducted rescue operations to the crew and recovery of its cargoes,” Medina said, adding, the boat was also towed by the navy vessel and turned over to the Philippine Coast Guard.

Philippine Navy photos released February 26, 2019 to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner show the rescued passengers of an ill-fated off Tawi-Tawi province.

“The successful rescue of the crew of M/L Jomong is a result of an intensified maritime patrol and operations of the Philippine Navy. Through the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, the Philippine Navy will remain vigilant in its area of operations for a secured and safe Western Mindanao maritime environment,” he added.

Medina did not say how long the passengers of the ill-fated boat were floating at sea, an area near Sabah where Abu Sayyaf militants frequently pass to target Malaysian and Indonesian trawlers. (Mindanao Examiner)

Regional police chief Emmanuel Licup said the 47-year old Julficar Ladjahali, of Bongao town, was arrested along with Nixon Imdani, 46, after they allegedly sold methamphetamine hydrochloride also known as “shabu” to anti-narcotics agents in the village of San Jose Gusu.

He said members of the Drug Enforcement Unit also seized six packets of suspected shabu, one .45-caliber pistol and a magazine loaded with 15 ammunition, 25 bullets for 9mm pistol and two magazines for automatic rifle and 10 ammunition.

“The arrested persons are now detained and all the confiscated items will be brought to Zamboanga City Crime Laboratory Office for examination,” Licup said.

Mayor Beng Climaco also reiterated her order to authorities to intensify the government’s anti-drug campaign as she praised the police and other law enforcement agencies for their active role in eradicating illegal drugs here.

Climaco also asked officials of Zamboanga’s 98 villages to submit a checklist detailing security and safety measures in their respective areas. The security checklist was given out during the expanded meeting of the City Peace and Order Council and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council on January 31 which Climaco heads.

Village officials are to submit the following: List of notorious personalities or suspected armed groups, list of Barangay Intelligence Network members, list of barangay tanods, list of foreigners staying in the barangay, list of religious leaders and elders and other persons of influence, list of all residents, list of all civic, religious organizations and sectoral groups to include youth groups and LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer), guard system of tanods, list of finger wharves, list of bancas and other water crafts, list of current government projects in the barangays, list of issues and concerns the barangay is facing.

Climaco said checklist is part of the comprehensive security measures that the police, military and all other law enforcement agencies have implemented here following the recent twin suicide bombings at a cathedral in Jolo town in Sulu province and the grenade attack on a mosque in Talon-Talon village here. Sayyaf linked to Sabah kidnappings slain in Tawi-Tawi

ZAMBOANGA CITY - An Abu Sayyaf militant linked to the spate of ransom kidnappings in Sabah in Malaysia and Philippines was killed in a shootout with security forces at a checkpoint in the southern Filipino province of Tawi-Tawi, officials said Thursday.

Officials said Shaifful Julaili engaged troops in a firefight while trying to flee the checkpoint in Lapid-Lapid village in the capital town of Bongao. There was no report of casualties on the side of security forces.

"The Abu Sayyaf, Shaifful Jalaili, violently escaped the checkpoint and fired at government troops which prompted them to retaliate and killed him," said Rear Adminral Rene Medina, chief of the Naval Forces in Western Mindanao. He said the Jalaili was involved in the series of kidnapping activities in Sulu Sea, particularly in the boundaries of Tawi-Tawi and Sabah.

Medina said the slain militant was also implicated in the recent kidnappings of Indonesian fishermen off Sabah, but it was not immediately known whether Jalaili and his pro-ISIS group is planning to launch new kidnappings in the area. Security forces have put up roadblocks and checkpoints in many areas in Tawi-Tawi as part of an intensified campaign against lawlessness.

Troops are battling Abu Sayyaf fighters in the neighboring province of Sulu where a pair of suicide bombers attacked a cathedral in the capital town of Jolo on January 27 that killed at least 2 dozen people and injured over 100 more. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the deadly bombings and President Rodrigo Duterte, quoting intelligence reports, said an Indonesian couple was behind the attacks.

Five local men linked by authorities to the twin attacks have surrendered recently to deny the accusations against them, but police filed criminal charges against them after government prosecutors said they have "more than enough" evidence to indict the suspects. But the leader of the Abu Sayyaf, Hajan Sawadjaan, who is also the emir of ISIS inn the Philippines, and over a dozen other militants also tied to the attacks, are still at-large and being hunted down by thousands of soldiers and police commandos.

Duterte, who inspected the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral a day after the bombings, ordered security forces to destroy the Abu Sayyaf, whose leaders pledged allegiance with the Islamic State, and vowed to fight for the establishment of a caliphate in the restive region. (Mindanao Examiner)
