Victims of Jolo cathedral bombings get aid from ARMM
ZAMBOANGA CITY - Governor Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) visited 36 of the dozens of wounded victims of the twin bombings of Sulu's Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral to provide both moral support and cash assistance of P20,000 for their medical needs.
The survivors, who were transferred here, are undergoing treatment at the Zamboanga City Medical Hospital. DSWD ARMM Secretary Laisa Alamia said their staffs in Sulu are also ready to assist the victims and their families.
According to the ARMM HEART (Humanitarian Emergency Action and Response Team), the regional government released some of P320,000 in cash and distributed the money to the victims in the hospital.
A total of P400,000 was earmarked as initial assistance for the people affected by the bombings, and will be distributed equally among the blast survivors and the families of the people killed by the attacks. And cash assistance of P500,000 will also be given to the parish for the renovation or repair of the cathedral.
While military operations against the Abu Sayyaf continue in Sulu, villagers from Latih and Bungkaong in Patikul town were also assisted by DSWD ARMM by distributing relief goods to those who fled their homes, according to Alamia.
"So far, the DSWD ARMM has monitored around 62 families displaced, from Barangay Bungkaong and other barangays to Barangay Latih in Patikul. DSWD ARMM in Sulu started distributing relief goods to the IDPs or internally displaced persons. The number of IDPs is expected to increase in the coming days. The DSWD ARMM will continue to provide assistance to the IDPs until they can safely return to their homes," she said. (Bureau of Public Information)

Book on Bangsamoro narratives launched in Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA CITY – A prolific writer and author Amir Mawallil has launched his new book entitled “A Constant Retelling – Exploring the Bangsamoro Narratives” in a well-attended event held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University here.
The weekend launching of the book was graced by Filipino Jesuit priest Karel San Juan, who is the president of the Ateneo de Zamboanga; and human rights advocate and noted lawyer Laisa Alamia, who is the Executive Secretary and concurrent Social Welfare Secretary of the Muslim autonomous region.
The book about Bangsamoro, which literally means Muslim nation, contains the repositories of a community’s identities, histories, nations. And Mawallil said the narratives in the book speak with eloquence of the Bangsamoro aspirations as a people.
In his speech, Mawallil thanked all those who supported him, particularly the Ateneo de Zamboanga University for allowing him to bring the book and narratives of the Bangsamoro to the public consciousness.
He said the book is collection of concrete narratives of the Bangsamoro. It documents their language of resistance against the hegemony of the Filipino nationalist discourse. “It does this for its own survival, the Bangsa or nation, through language that binds the community together. This, too, is part of the many histories that make up the set of narratives that imbue the history of the Philippines as a nation. I am hopeful that this book will help build the kind of peace in Mindanao that our people need, that this contribution, small as it is, will be the seed of many good things,” he said.
The Bangsamoro narrative, according to the author, is built with the “blood and tears” of its people. “You can revise words, but you cannot revise lives, or the experiences that ran through those lives as surely as our blood flows in our veins and our tears flow as a people. This collection taken from the Bangsamoro narratives is a testament to the victories we have won together in the struggle for self-determination. It is my way of documenting each history that should never be forgotten, for they hold valuable learning - the kind only experience and remembrance can teach,” Mawallil, who is a Tausug or native of Sulu province, said.
“This book is not about me as the author. It is not even just about a certain ethno-linguistic group called the Tausug, Meranaw or Maguindanaoan. Rather it is about the blood, sweat, tears and struggle of those who came before all of us. It is about a nation coming into its own, a people coming up to the light after a very dark night, so that we may move forward and become the nation we all dream of,” he added.

ARMM recognizes 'Outstanding Stewards of Environment'
COTABATO CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DENR-ARMM) on Tuesday gave recognition to this year’s "10 Outstanding Stewards of Environment" for their contribution in protecting and preserving the region’s ecosystems.
Given due recognition during the Gawad Kalikasan 2018 awarding ceremony were 603rd Brigade, 6th Infantry Division, Foundation for the Philippine Environment, Atty. Randolph Parcasio, Hineleban Foundation, Inc., Municipal governments of North Upi, Maguindanao; Wao, Lanao del Sur; Datu Abdullah Sangki, Maguindanao; Ampatuan, Maguindanao; Parang, Maguindanao; and Datu Odin Sinsuat, also in Maguindanao.
DENR-ARMM Secretary Kahal Kedtag led the awarding ceremony and assisted by ARMM Executive Secretary Atty. Laisa Alamia, and DENR assistant secretaries Alindatu Pagayao and Abdelwin Sangkula.
During the ceremony, plaques of appreciation were also given to 48 individuals from the security and media sectors who also contributed in making ARMM environment-friendly.
“We can’t achieve these milestones of the DENR-ARMM without the help of our strategic partners. These groups of people contributed their resources, time and effort in advancing the cause and mandate of the department. It is only fitting that we honor them through the 2018 Gawad Kalikasan,” Secretary Kedtag said.
Brigadier General Juvymax Uy, of the 6th Infantry Division, said the Philippine Army will continue to support initiatives aimed at preserving the environment. “We are one with your agency (DENR-ARMM) in protecting our environment. The 6th Infantry Division strongly supports the activity of Gawad Kalikasan 2018,” he said. (Bureau of Public Information)
