Dutch hostage who joined Abu Sayyaf is killed in Sulu
ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Dutch hostage of the Abu Sayyaf, who was reported to have joined the pro-ISIS group after developing Stockholm syndrome after 7 years in captivity, was killed during a firefight Friday in the southern Philippine province of Sulu.
A military photo shows two cadavers believed that of Dutch hostage Ewold Horn and Mingayan Sahiron, one of the wives of Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron who were killed on May 31, 2019 during a firefight in the southern Philippine province of Sulu.
The fighting between militants and army soldiers erupted in Pansul village in Patikul town that also killed one of the wives of Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron. Eight other soldiers were also wounded in the battle, according to the military’s Western Mindanao Command.
It said Horn was reportedly shot by one of his captors while attempting to escape during the fighting. His body was recovered along with Mingayan Sahiron, who was slain in the clash that lasted over an hour.
“Horn was shot by one of his guards when he tried to escape from the Abu Sayyaf during this morning’s gunfight. After an hour and thirty minutes of gun battle, troops recovered the remains of Horn and that of Mingayan Sahiron, the second wife of the Abu Sayyaf top leader,” said Major Gen. Divino Pabayo, commander of an anti-terror task force in Sulu.
The military did not say if soldiers witnessed the killing of Horn or not.
Pabayo, who described the fighting as ferocious, said six militants were allegedly killed and a dozen more injured, but it was unclear whether the casualties suffered by the Abu Sayyaf were based on intelligence reports as troops only recovered the bodies of Horn and Sahiron’s wife.
Horn, according to Sulu police commander Pablo Labra, had developed Stockholm syndrome, a condition which causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity.
“We received information that he developed Stockholm syndrome and spotted carrying a weapon,” Labra told The Times on an interview just this month.
It was not immediately known whether Horn had fought security forces side by side with the Abu Sayyaf. “We really don't know if he had fought troops, but if he engages security forces and the lives of our troops are put in grave danger then we have no other recourse but to fight back,” Labra said.
Horn and Swiss wildlife photographer Lorenzo Vinciguerra were both captured by Abu Sayyaf militants under Hajan Sawadjaan and suspected Moro National Liberation Front members in the coastal village of Parangan in Tawi-Tawi’s Panglima Sugala town in February 2012.
Vinciguerra managed to escape from his guards and recovered by soldiers in December 2014 after he allegedly killed one of his guards - Juhurim Hussien - with a bolo. (The Zamboanga Post)

Troops comb Sulu’s jungles, islands in Sayyaf hunt
SULU – Government troops continue their assault on Abu Sayyaf lairs where security forces have been combing the hinterlands and islands in the southern province of Sulu.
Just recently, soldiers killed 2 pro-ISIS militants, but three infantrymen were also wounded in the clashes in Bangkal village in Patikul town.
The military said one of those killed, known only by his alias Barak Ingog, allegedly helped carry out a twin suicide attacks by an Indonesian couple on a Catholic church in the capital town of Jolo in January this year that killed and wounded dozens of people, mostly civilians and soldiers. The other slain militant, Nasser Sawadjaan, was a nephew of Abu Sayyaf leader Hajan Sawadajaan.
The military did not say whether soldiers recovered the bodies of the slain militants, although it reported that troops recovered an M16 rifle in the area. It said Ingog was one of the facilitators of the bombing of the Cathedral in Jolo town on January 27 this year while Sawadjaan was a nephew of Abu Sayyaf leader Hajan Sawadjaan.
There were no reports of civilian casualties, but Governor Toto Tan has deployed social workers and dispatched food aid since March to assist villagers who were affected by the military campaign. It was unknown whether the regional government had sent aid to Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the newly-created Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. (The Zamboanga Post)

Fighting erupts in Sulu
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Three more soldiers were wounded in fierce clashes with Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Filipino province of Sulu and bringing the casualties to 5 as fighting continues Friday, the military said.
The Western Mindanao Command said soldiers also recovered 2 bodies of slain militants in Panglayahan village in Patikul town where troops clashed Thursday with some 120 Abu Sayyaf gunmen under Radulan Sahiron and Hajan Sawadjaan.
Security forces also battled about 80 more militants in Kabbon Takas village, also in Patikul, later in the day. And the military claimed that 10 more militants were killed and many more wounded, but no cadavers were recovered by soldiers, except for 2 bodies.
On Thursday, the military said 2 soldiers were also wounded in the fighting. And early this week, soldiers also clashed in Patikul and killed 2 militants, one of them Barak Ingog, helped facilitate twin suicide attacks by an Indonesian ISIS couple on a Catholic church in the capital town of Jolo in January.
The bombings killed and wounded dozens of people, mostly civilians and soldiers. The other slain gunman, Nasser Sawadjaan, was a nephew of Sawadajaan.
Security forces mounted massive operations in Sulu since early this year as part of President Duterte's order to the military to destroy the Abu Sayyaf, whose leaders pledged allegiance with ISIS.
The operations had resulted in the recovery of 2 Indonesian and a Malaysian fisherman held by the Abu Sayyaf on Simisa Island off Sulu. However, two of the hostages, Malaysian Jari Abdullah, eventually died in hospital in Zamboanga City from a gunshot wound, and Hariadin drowned while escaping the fighting between troops and militants. Sayyaf fighter killed, 2 soldiers wounded in fresh fighting in Sulu
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Fighting erupted Thursday between pro-ISIS group Abu Sayyaf and army soldiers in Sulu province in southern Philippines, the military said.
It said the clash erupted in Panglayahan village in Patikul town after soldiers ran into a group of Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron. The fighting lasted 40 minutes. “The encounter resulted in one enemy killed and slightly wounding of two soldiers. Engaged troops are on hot pursuit of the fleeing enemy,” it said in a statement.

4 soldiers wounded in Sayyaf clash in Sulu
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Four soldiers, including an army officer, were wounded in fierce battle with Abu Sayyaf militants in Sulu province in southern Philippines, officials said Tuesday.
Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, a spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command, said the fighting erupted in the village called Panglayahan in Patikul town. He said troops from the 32nd Infantry Battalion clashed Monday afternoon with about 50 gunmen under Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron.
“Heavy skirmishes ensued which resulted to the wounding of an army officer and three soldiers, while heavy casualties were reported on the enemy's side based on human intelligence,” Besana said.
He said the wounded soldiers were evacuated to a military hospital in the capital town of Jolo. The identities and ranks of the casualties were not made public by Besana.
Soldiers recovered 50 kilos of rice, personal belongings with blood stains and assorted medicines from the Abu Sayyaf encampment.
Lt. Gen. Arnel dela Vega, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said operations against the Abu Sayyaf will not stop until the militants have been neutralized. “The Joint Task Force Sulu continues to intensify the conduct of offensives against the Abu Sayyaf to neutralize the remaining bandits,” he said.
Dela Vega also thanked the local government and civilians for providing intelligence to the military. “We extend our gratitude to the local government and the populace for helping troops in fighting terrorism by means of giving information, thus, making it easier for us to neutralize the outlaws,” he said.
